Chapter 10 - Coming Home

I returned to America without Daniel.

The airport felt different.

Everything did.

Marcus walked beside me as we emerged into arrivals.

Reporters weren't waiting.

There were no dramatic cameras.

No cinematic crowd.

Just ordinary people hugging relatives and dragging luggage toward parking garages.

I loved the normality of it.

My attorney met us the following morning.

Divorce papers were already prepared.

“So quickly?” I asked.

“You sounded certain.”

“I am.”

For years, Daniel had convinced me certainty was cruelty.

If I refused a financial request, I was selfish.

If I questioned Evelyn, I was disrespectful.

If I wanted privacy, I was secretive.

If I maintained independence, I didn't understand marriage.

Now I understood something simple.

A boundary does not become wrong because someone dislikes it.

I signed.

Daniel received the petition two days later.

He called from an unfamiliar number.

“You're divorcing me?”

“Yes.”

“After everything we've been through?”

I almost admired the audacity.

“Especially after everything we've been through.”

“My mother was right about you.”

There it was.

Evelyn.

Always Evelyn.

“What was she right about?”

“You never understood family.”

I looked at Rachel’s letter lying on my attorney's desk.

“No, Daniel. I finally do.”

“You think Sophie is going to choose you?”

“This isn't about choosing.”

“It always is.”

That sentence explained more about him than anything else.

For Daniel, love was allegiance.

Family was hierarchy.

Marriage was possession.

A child choosing safety became betrayal.

A wife choosing independence became war.

“I hope someday you understand how wrong you are,” I said.

“You'll regret this.”

“Goodbye, Daniel.”

I disconnected.

My attorney looked at me.

“You okay?”

I expected to say no.

Instead I realized I was.

“Actually, yes.”

But freedom was only beginning.

Vale had disappeared.

And the money trail suggested he had known exactly what Daniel intended.

Three days later, federal investigators contacted my attorney.

They wanted to speak with me.

Not because I was suspected of anything.

Because I had almost become the mechanism through which millions disappeared.

May you like

The trust Daniel wanted me to sign was part of something larger.

And Graham Vale was still out there.
