Chapter 18 - The Call I Never Expected

Daniel called two years after Thailand.
By then, our divorce was final.
The financial cases had produced consequences for everyone involved. Vale’s professional empire had collapsed. Evelyn lived quietly and had begun rebuilding limited contact with Sophie under boundaries Sophie controlled.
Daniel sounded older.
“Vanessa.”
“Daniel.”
“I heard you went back.”
“To Thailand?”
“Yes.”
“With Sophie.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“Was it good?”
“It was.”
Another pause.
“I'm glad.”
I waited for manipulation.
It didn't come.
“I owe you an apology,” he said.
“You've apologized.”
“Not correctly.”
That surprised me.
He continued.
“I spent a long time saying I did what I did because I was scared, because Vale pressured me, because Mom controlled me, because of the debt.”
I said nothing.
“Those things may explain choices. They don't excuse them.”
For once, I agreed completely.
“I took your passport because I wanted control. I canceled your flight because I wanted you frightened enough to sign. I involved Sophie because I believed being her father meant I could decide what she was allowed to feel.”
His voice broke slightly.
“I was wrong.”
I closed my eyes.
Years earlier, those words might have brought me back.
Now they simply brought peace.
“Thank you for saying that.”
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
He gave a small, sad laugh.
“Still you.”
“No. Actually, much more me than before.”
“I deserved that.”
We talked briefly about Sophie.
Nothing more.
Before hanging up, Daniel said, “Vanessa?”
“Yes?”
“When Mom wrote that note… about nobody coming for you…”
“I remember.”
“She was wrong.”
I looked through the window of my home.
Sophie was outside with friends, laughing.
Marcus was arguing with someone on the phone about barbecue technique.
My life was full.
“Yes,” I said. “She was.”
May you like
I ended the call.
And for the first time, Daniel’s voice did not remain in my head afterward.
