Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Papers

Graham Vale had built a career around respectable rooms.
Wood-paneled offices.
Quiet conference tables.
Expensive suits.
Words like legacy, preservation, family stewardship.
People trusted him because he never looked desperate.
That made him dangerous.
Investigators showed me documents recovered from Daniel.
Vale had structured transactions involving multiple clients, not only our family.
The pattern suggested money moving through trusts and companies in ways now under investigation.
I answered every question truthfully.
Then one investigator placed a document before me.
“Have you seen this?”
My signature appeared at the bottom.
I stared.
“I never signed that.”
“You're certain?”
“Absolutely.”
The signature looked good.
Very good.
But the date exposed it.
I had been in Thailand.
The document supposedly had been signed in Oregon.
Someone had forged my name.
My stomach turned.
“What does this document do?”
“It purports to authorize preliminary transfer of your shares.”
“Can they take them?”
“Not based simply on this document, especially now that authenticity is disputed.”
Relief came slowly.
Then anger.
Daniel hadn't merely hoped I would sign.
Someone had prepared for the possibility that I wouldn't.
The investigation expanded.
Forensic specialists compared signatures.
Electronic records were preserved.
The acquisition involving my father's company was temporarily complicated, but my ownership remained protected while the issues were examined.
Then Vale was located.
He hadn't fled the country.
He had checked into a private clinic under his own name.
Perhaps he thought respectability could protect him forever.
It couldn't.
But the biggest surprise came from Evelyn.
Through her attorney, she offered information.
She wanted protection for herself.
Of course she did.
The woman who had written Let’s see who comes for you now suddenly wanted someone to come for her.
My attorney almost smiled when he told me.
“What does she know?”
“A lot.”
“About Daniel?”
“And Vale.”
I stared through the window.
“Will she talk about Rachel?”
“She already has.”
My heart stopped.
“What did she say?”
“Rachel discovered the financial scheme. Evelyn admits helping Daniel conceal accounts.”
“And the crash?”
“No admission of involvement.”
Again, reality refused to become a convenient thriller.
Evelyn admitted cruelty.
Financial misconduct.
Manipulation.
But she denied causing Rachel’s death, and there was still no evidence proving otherwise.
I could live with uncertainty.
Sophie would have to learn to live with it too.

But Evelyn revealed one final fact.
Daniel had known about my inheritance before he ever asked me on our first date.
