Chapter 12 - Before He Loved Me

I met Daniel at a charity dinner.

For years, I remembered it as chance.

He spilled sparkling water near my dress.

I laughed.

He apologized.

We talked for two hours.

He asked for my number.

A romantic accident.

Except it wasn't.

Evelyn told investigators that Vale had identified me months earlier.

My father’s dormant shares were approaching a major change in value.

Daniel knew my name.

He knew my background.

He knew I was unmarried.

He knew I had inherited assets I barely understood.

Then he met me.

I sat in my apartment holding a photograph from our wedding.

Daniel smiling.

Me looking at him as though I had found home.

How much had been real?

That question haunted me.

Marcus refused to answer it for me.

“People can begin relationships for bad reasons and still develop real feelings,” he said. “Or they can fake everything. Only Daniel knows.”

“I want to know.”

“I understand.”

“But I never will.”

“Maybe not.”

That hurt more than discovering the money.

I could recover money.

I couldn't recover four years and inspect every moment for authenticity.

So I stopped trying.

That became one of the hardest lessons of my life.

Healing wasn't solving every mystery.

Sometimes healing meant deciding that unanswered questions no longer controlled tomorrow.

Sophie came to stay with me temporarily under arrangements approved through the proper process.

The first night, she stood in the guest-room doorway.

“Can I ask something weird?”

“Sure.”

“Are you going to leave?”

“No.”

“You can't promise that.”

She was right.

Adults had made too many promises around her.

So I corrected myself.

“I can promise something else.”

“What?”

“If circumstances ever change, I will tell you the truth. I won't disappear while you're sleeping.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Okay.”

She hugged me.

Later that night, I found something on my kitchen counter.

A folded note.

For one horrible second, Thailand returned.

Then I opened it.

Sophie's handwriting.

Thank you for coming for me.

I sat down and cried.

May you like

Evelyn had asked who would come for me.

She never imagined the answer would eventually be me.
