Chapter 15 - The Trial of Truth

The legal cases unfolded over months, not minutes.

There was no single dramatic courtroom revelation.

Evidence accumulated.

Documents were authenticated.

Financial records were traced.

Witnesses testified.

Agreements were negotiated.

Vale faced serious financial allegations.

Daniel faced consequences connected to financial conduct and what he had done with my property and documents.

Evelyn cooperated extensively.

My divorce moved separately.

I learned that justice is often administrative.

Forms.

Deadlines.

Depositions.

Waiting rooms.

People imagine justice as a gavel striking wood.

Sometimes justice is simply refusing to stop documenting what happened.

The forged signature became especially important.

Digital records connected its preparation to Vale’s office.

Evidence also showed Daniel had discussed transferring my shares before Thailand.

My refusal had accelerated their plan.

Then something unexpected happened.

Daniel accepted responsibility for taking my passport and phone.

Not for everything.

But enough.

He also acknowledged that Sophie had been pressured to travel despite objecting.

That admission mattered deeply to her.

“Why now?” she asked me.

“Maybe his lawyers advised it.”

“So it isn't real?”

“I don't know.”

She frowned.

“You always say that.”

“Say what?”

“That you don't know.”

“Because sometimes I don't.”

She thought about it.

Then nodded.

“I like that.”

“What?”

“Adults usually pretend.”

That sentence stayed with me.

I had spent years around adults who converted opinions into facts whenever it benefited them.

Evelyn did it.

Daniel did it.

Vale built a career around making questionable things look official.

Maybe honesty was sometimes as simple as saying:

I know this.

I don't know that.

And I won't lie to bridge the distance between them.

Sophie began therapy.

She returned to school.

She made friends.

She started painting again.

One afternoon she painted the Thailand villa.

I recognized the ocean immediately.

But in her version, the room was empty.

No Daniel.

No Evelyn.

No me.

Only an open door leading outside.

“What's it called?” I asked.

May you like

She smiled.

“Exit.”
