Chapter 11 - The Woman Before Lily

Her name was Anna Pierce.

She had dated Bradley in college.

Caroline had learned about her through mutual friends.

Anna had inherited property from her grandmother.

The pattern was familiar.

Charm.

Isolation.

Financial advice.

Margaret's involvement.

Then Anna abruptly left.

No public explanation.

Thomas located her in Oregon.

Anna agreed to speak by video.

When Lily saw her face, she felt something strange.

Recognition.

Not because they looked alike.

Because Anna's eyes looked the way Lily's had looked in old photographs.

Careful.

Anna told them she had escaped after discovering Margaret copying financial documents.

Bradley had been twenty-two.

Young.

But old enough to know.

"He apologized," Anna said.

"For what?"

"For letting his mother choose me."

Lily closed her eyes.

So Bradley's claim that Margaret had started everything was true.

But so was something worse.

He had known the pattern for twelve years.

He had participated again anyway.

Anna had never reported them.

"I was embarrassed."

Lily understood.

"I thought people would ask why I stayed."

"They do."

Anna smiled sadly.

"What do you tell them?"

Lily thought.

"That leaving is usually a process, not a door."

Anna began crying.

So did Lily.

Anna's testimony strengthened the broader investigation.

But emotionally, it did something else.

It destroyed Bradley's last excuse.

He hadn't stumbled into Margaret's plan.

He had returned to it.

Again.

And again.

When Lily confronted him during a supervised family mediation, Bradley didn't deny it.

"I thought this time would be different."

"Because you loved me?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you stop?"

He looked down.

"Because I was afraid of her."

Lily nodded.

"So was I."

Bradley looked up.

"But I didn't help her hurt you."

He had no answer.

Lily stood.

For the first time, she knew the marriage was truly over.

Not legally.

That paperwork would come later.

May you like

Inside her.

It was finished.
