Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Took Notes

"Dr. Mercer."

Lily could barely say the name.

On Thomas's monitor, the woman inside Evelyn's flower shop wore a dark coat and gloves.

Dr. Claire Mercer.

Lily's therapist.

The woman who had spent weeks telling her that isolation was sometimes necessary for "emotional stabilization."

Thomas immediately called the police.

By the time officers arrived, Mercer had disappeared.

But she had made one mistake.

She had entered on camera.

And she had opened Evelyn's desk.

"What would she be looking for?" Thomas asked.

"The recording," Evelyn said.

"But why would she think it was there?"

Lily looked at them.

"Bradley thinks you keep everything at the shop."

Evelyn remembered.

Tax records.

Family photographs.

Copies of insurance documents.

Even Lily's childhood report cards.

Bradley had joked about it.

Apparently he had been listening.

The next morning, Evelyn met attorney Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca watched the nursery recording without interruption.

Then she read Thomas's notes.

When she finished, she said, "Do not contact Bradley."

Lily nodded.

"Do not contact Margaret. Do not contact Mercer. Save every message. Screenshot everything. Don't post anything online."

Evelyn asked the question that mattered.

"Can they take Sophie?"

"Not because Lily cried six days after childbirth."

Lily exhaled.

"But," Rebecca continued, "they may already have filed something."

"What?"

"We're checking."

Two hours later, Rebecca called.

They had.

Bradley had petitioned for emergency temporary custody.

His filing described Lily as unstable, unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

Attached were excerpts from Dr. Mercer's notes.

Lily read one sentence three times.

Patient demonstrates paranoid fixation regarding husband's family.

"I never said that."

Rebecca looked at her.

"Can you prove it?"

Lily thought.

Then remembered.

"My journal."

"Where is it?"

"The house."

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

He shook his head immediately.

"No."

"I'm not sending her."

"You're not going either."

Rebecca agreed.

"We request the belongings legally."

But Lily suddenly sat forward.

"The baby monitor."

"What about it?"

"It records."

Bradley had purchased an expensive nursery system that automatically saved short clips whenever it detected sound.

Margaret loved it because she could watch Sophie remotely.

But perhaps Margaret had forgotten what else it recorded.

Thomas asked, "Where does it save?"

Lily's eyes widened.

"My account."

They opened her laptop.

The password worked.

Hundreds of clips appeared.

Baby crying.

Lily singing.

Lily changing diapers.

Bradley entering and leaving.

Margaret criticizing her.

They searched backward.

Then found one from three weeks earlier.

Margaret and Bradley were alone in the nursery.

Lily had been downstairs.

Margaret's voice was clear.

"Mercer needs more examples."

Bradley answered, "She's working on it."

"Not enough."

"Once the baby comes, Lily will be exhausted."

Margaret laughed softly.

"Everyone is unstable when they haven't slept."

Evelyn felt sick.

The recording continued.

Bradley lowered his voice.

"And after?"

Margaret replied.

"Custody first."

A pause.

"Then competency."

Lily covered her mouth.

Evelyn reached for her.

On screen, Bradley asked the question they had all feared.

"And the trust?"

Margaret smiled.

"Once she's declared incapable, you petition to manage it."

Rebecca immediately said, "Download everything."

Thomas already was.

Clip after clip revealed pieces of the plan.

Not enough alone.

Together, devastating.

They had encouraged sleep deprivation.

Margaret had deliberately awakened Lily after Sophie finally slept.

Bradley had refused nighttime care.

Mercer had documented Lily's exhaustion as instability.

Then came the clip that silenced everyone.

Bradley stood beside the crib talking on his phone.

"I don't care how long it takes."

He listened.

"No, my mother says Evelyn is the real problem."

Another pause.

"Then deal with her."

The clip ended.

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

"Deal with me?"

Thomas's expression was grim.

"We're finding out what that means."

Rebecca closed the laptop.

"From this point forward, nobody goes anywhere alone."

That afternoon, Bradley began calling.

Lily didn't answer.

Then came messages.

I love you.

Please come home.

Mom overreacted.

We can fix this.

Then:

You're destroying our family.

Then:

If you keep Sophie from me, you'll regret it.

Rebecca saved every one.

At 6:14 p.m., another message arrived.

Not from Bradley.

From Dr. Mercer.

Lily, I'm deeply concerned about your mental state. Please contact me immediately.

Rebecca smiled without humor.

"She's documenting."

Lily blocked the number.

Then Sophie's diaper bag vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Thomas opened the side pocket.

Inside was a small black device.

A tracker.

Lily went white.

"I didn't put that there."

Thomas examined it.

"It's active."

Evelyn looked toward the windows.

"They know where we are."

Thomas pulled the curtains.

May you like

Rebecca called the police.

And outside, parked halfway down the street, a black SUV switched on its headlights.
