Chapter 13 - Bradley Without Margaret

Margaret's legal restrictions changed Bradley.
Or perhaps they revealed him.
Without his mother directing every decision, he seemed lost.
During supervised visits with Sophie, he struggled.
Not because he was incapable.
Because he had never learned.
The first time Sophie cried, Bradley looked toward the supervisor.
"What does she need?"
The supervisor answered:
"You're her father."
Bradley tried.
Awkwardly.
He learned bottles.
Diapers.
Songs.
For Lily, watching this was complicated.
Part of her resented that he was becoming the father he should have been from the beginning.
Another part wanted Sophie to have a safe father if that was possible.
Rebecca reminded her that boundaries weren't revenge.
They were conditions.
Bradley would have to earn trust slowly.
Not demand it.
Not inherit it.
Earn it.
Months later, he apologized to Lily again.
This time without mentioning Margaret.
"I chose what I did."
Lily looked at him.
"Yes."
"I could have stopped."
"Yes."
"I didn't."
"No."
"I'm sorry."
Lily waited for herself to feel something dramatic.
She didn't.
"Thank you for saying that."
Bradley nodded.
He seemed disappointed.
Maybe he had expected forgiveness.
Maybe reconciliation.
May you like
He received neither.
Sometimes consequences were quiet.
