Chapter 3 - The File on Lily

Evelyn did not leave the house alone.

Twenty minutes later, Lily walked out carrying Sophie while Evelyn carried a hastily packed overnight bag.

Bradley stood in the doorway.

Margaret remained behind him.

Neither tried to physically stop them.

The camera had changed that.

As Evelyn opened the passenger door, Bradley called after Lily.

"You'll regret this."

Lily stopped.

Evelyn touched her arm.

"Don't."

But Lily turned.

For the first time all afternoon, she looked directly at her husband.

"No," she said. "I think I've regretted staying."

Bradley's expression went flat.

Then Lily got into the car.

They drove away.

For five minutes, nobody spoke.

Sophie slept in her carrier.

Lily stared through the window.

Then she whispered, "Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Don't take me to your house."

Evelyn looked at her.

"Why?"

"He knows where you live."

A chill moved through her.

"Has he threatened me?"

"No."

"Then why—"

"He knows everything about you."

Evelyn slowed the car.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

Lily began rubbing her hands together.

"I saw a folder once."

"What folder?"

"It had your name on it."

Evelyn pulled into a parking lot.

"Lily."

"I wasn't supposed to see it."

"When?"

"Two months ago."

"What was inside?"

"I don't know. Bradley came in before I could open it."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Lily gave her a broken look.

"Because by then I barely knew what was real anymore."

Evelyn reached across the console.

Her daughter grabbed her hand.

For several minutes they sat silently.

Then Evelyn called the one person she trusted.

Her younger brother, Thomas.

He answered immediately.

"Evelyn?"

"I need help."

His tone changed.

"Where are you?"

She told him.

"Stay there."

Twenty-five minutes later, Thomas arrived.

At sixty-one, he still moved like the detective he had been before retirement: quietly, deliberately, noticing everything.

He saw Lily.

The baby.

The overnight bag.

Then the expression on Evelyn's face.

"What happened?"

Evelyn touched the brooch.

"Your ridiculous birthday present just became useful."

They went to Thomas's house.

He transferred the recording immediately.

Three copies.

One on his computer.

One encrypted online.

One on a flash drive.

Only then did Evelyn breathe normally.

Thomas watched the footage once.

He didn't speak.

He watched it again.

When it ended, he removed his glasses.

"How long?"

"We don't know."

Lily sat on the couch holding Sophie.

Thomas crouched near her.

"I'm going to ask questions. You don't have to answer anything you're not ready to answer."

Lily nodded.

For the next hour, the story emerged.

Slowly.

Bradley controlling the bank accounts.

Margaret arriving without warning.

Appointments Lily hadn't agreed to.

A therapist recommended by the Whitmore family.

Notes about Lily's "mood."

Medication suggestions.

Phone calls made without her.

And always the same warning.

If you don't cooperate, people will think you're unstable.

Thomas took notes.

Then Lily remembered something.

"The basement."

Evelyn looked up.

"What?"

"Bradley keeps a locked filing cabinet downstairs."

Thomas stopped writing.

"What's in it?"

"I don't know."

"The folder with my name?" Evelyn asked.

Lily nodded.

"I think so."

Thomas leaned back.

"Did you ever see other names?"

"Yes."

"Whose?"

Lily closed her eyes.

"Mine."

"Anyone else?"

A long pause.

Then Lily opened her eyes.

"Sophie."

Evelyn felt cold.

"The baby has a file?"

Lily nodded.

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

Neither needed to say what they were thinking.

This was bigger than an abusive afternoon.

Someone had been preparing something.

Thomas asked, "Does Bradley have access to your money?"

"Yes."

"Your medical records?"

"I signed something."

"Insurance?"

"Yes."

"Property?"

"The house is partly mine."

Margaret's insistence suddenly made more sense.

Thomas stood.

"We need a lawyer."

"I know one," Evelyn said.

But Lily shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"There's something else."

She swallowed.

"The house wasn't Bradley's."

"What do you mean?"

"My grandfather left me money."

Evelyn stared.

Lily had inherited money from her father's family, but Evelyn had never asked details.

"How much?"

Lily whispered the amount.

Thomas stopped moving.

Evelyn felt the room tilt.

It wasn't a small inheritance.

It was enough to explain everything.

"Bradley manages it?"

Lily nodded.

"He said marriage meant trust."

Thomas muttered something under his breath.

Evelyn asked, "Can he take it?"

"I don't know."

Thomas did.

"Not easily."

Then his expression darkened.

"Unless Lily is declared legally incapable of managing her own affairs."

The room went silent.

Lily's face drained of color.

"The records," she whispered.

Thomas nodded.

"The therapist. The notes. The videos. The custody threats."

Evelyn finished the thought.

"They weren't only trying to take Sophie."

Thomas looked at Lily.

"They may have been building a case to take control of you."

Lily began trembling.

Evelyn sat beside her.

"We don't know that yet."

But she knew.

Or at least she knew enough.

Then Thomas's laptop made a sound.

He turned.

The security software monitoring the uploaded recording displayed an alert.

Someone had attempted to access Evelyn's cloud account.

Three failed logins.

Then five.

Then nine.

Thomas stared at the screen.

"They know you copied it."

"Can they delete it?"

"Not from here."

Another alert appeared.

This one wasn't from the cloud.

It was from Evelyn's flower shop security system.

Motion detected.

11:47 p.m.

The shop had closed four hours earlier.

Thomas opened the camera feed.

A figure in dark clothing moved through Evelyn's office.

The person went directly to her desk.

No searching.

No hesitation.

They knew exactly where they were going.

Evelyn leaned closer.

The figure turned toward the security camera.

For one second, the face became visible.

Lily gasped.

"Oh my God."

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Because the person breaking into her office wasn't Bradley.

May you like

It was someone Lily trusted.

Someone who had been quietly helping the Whitmores for months.
