Chapter 11 - A Mother's Confession

Evelyn didn't deny it.

She had known.

Not everything.

But enough.

Years earlier, she helped Jackson's father collect evidence.

After his death, Victor threatened Jackson.

So Evelyn surrendered.

“I chose my son.”

Jackson struggled to accept it.

“You protected me by letting criminals control our company.”

“I protected you by keeping you alive.”

Emily understood better than Jackson wanted her to.

Fear made people compromise.

Victor's greatest weapon had never been violence.

It was love.

He threatened the people his victims couldn't bear to lose.

Evelyn apologized to Emily.

“I should have searched harder for you.”

Emily embraced her.

“You were frightened too.”

Jackson watched them.

For years he had thought strength meant control.

Emily taught him differently.

Sometimes strength was admitting fear and refusing to let it rule the next decision.

They gave the recordings to federal prosecutors.

Arrests began.

Executives.

Bankers.

Lawyers.

Victor's empire collapsed piece by piece.

But one person remained unidentified.

The man who had actually tampered with Jackson's brakes.
