Chapter 13 - The Trial

The trial lasted months.

Emily testified.

So did Marcus.

So did Evelyn.

Jackson sat behind Emily every day.

Victor's attorneys attacked her credibility.

They called her confused.

Obsessed.

Unreliable.

Emily remained calm.

Then prosecutors played her recording from the crash.

Victor's voice filled the courtroom.

“He wasn't supposed to survive.”

The room went silent.

Victor finally looked afraid.

The jury convicted him.

Conspiracy.

Attempted murder.

Financial crimes.

Obstruction.

Other members of the network fell afterward.

When Emily exited the courthouse, reporters surrounded her.

One shouted:

“Emily, do you consider yourself a hero?”

She stopped.

Jackson watched.

Emily answered simply.

“No. I saw someone who needed help, so I helped him.”

Jackson smiled.

That was Emily.

She had never wanted recognition.

Only truth.

Outside the crowd, Jackson reached for her hand.

This time they walked away together in daylight.

No hiding.

May you like

No elevator doors.

No goodbye.
