Toby approached Maeve one evening.
“Can I call you Mama?”
Maeve's heart stopped.
“You already have a mama.”
“I know.”
He pointed toward Sarah's photograph.
“She was my first mama.”
Maeve swallowed.
“And?”
“Can somebody have two?”
Maeve looked toward Gideon.
He stood near the doorway, eyes wet.
Maeve crouched.
“If that's what your heart wants.”
Toby hugged her.
Tess joined immediately.
Gideon turned away.
Maeve laughed through tears.
“Are you hiding?”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Smoke.”
“There isn't any smoke.”
“There might be.”
