Chapter 18 - The Winter That Tested Them

The harshest winter in twenty years struck Black Pine Ridge.

Roads vanished.

Food dwindled.

Several neighboring families sought shelter at Gideon's cabin and schoolhouse.

Maeve organized supplies.

Gideon hunted.

Toby, now older and confident, helped gather wood.

Tess cared for younger children.

One night, Maeve watched them.

The frightened children beneath the table were gone.

In their place stood two compassionate young people.

Gideon came beside her.

“You did that.”

“No.”

Maeve leaned against him.

“We did.”

The storm lasted nine days.

Everyone survived.

When spring finally arrived, the community gathered outside the schoolhouse.

They placed a wooden sign above its entrance.

CALLAHAN-REED SCHOOL.

Maeve cried when she saw it.

Not because her name was there.

Because she finally understood that her life would leave something behind besides suffering.
