Chapter 17 - The Man Who Returned

Years passed.
Then a stranger arrived.
Maeve recognized him before he spoke.
Her father.
Thomas Callahan.
Alive.
Older.
Ashamed.
Maeve felt every abandoned childhood year return at once.
He explained.
Mining accident.
Debt.
Cowardice.
None of it erased what he had done.
“I came to ask forgiveness.”
Maeve looked at her children.
At Gideon.
At the home she had built.
“I can forgive you.”
Hope entered Thomas's face.
“But forgiveness doesn't erase consequences.”
He nodded.
Maeve allowed him to remain for supper.
Not because he deserved restoration.
Because she deserved freedom from bitterness.
It was the final chain connecting her to the abandoned girl she had once been.

And she chose to break it.
