Chapter 7 - My Sister Went Live

Hailey's livestream lasted nineteen minutes.

By the end, nearly half a million people had watched clips of it.

She didn't make herself innocent.

That was why people believed her.

"My sister did not steal anyone from me," she said. "I betrayed her."

She explained Trevor's lies.

The fake divorce papers.

The promises.

The money.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

"I knew he had been married to Claire. I should have called her. I didn't because I wanted to believe I had finally gotten something she had."

That sentence hurt more than anything Trevor had said.

But it was honest.

Hailey continued.

"My whole life, my parents taught Claire to give things up for me. I started believing that if she had something I wanted, eventually I deserved it too."

Mom called seventeen times during the livestream.

Hailey ignored every call.

Then she said:

"Claire paid my tuition. She paid our parents' bills. She helped me every time I asked. And I repaid her by believing the worst story anyone ever told about her because believing it gave me what I wanted."

The internet changed direction overnight.

But I didn't care about winning the internet.

I cared that my sister had finally stopped lying to herself.

Trevor remained in custody.

Martin's attorney began negotiating.

The acquisition closed successfully.

For the first time in months, life seemed to be moving toward stability.

Then Rebecca called.

"Claire, Trevor filed something."

"What?"

"A civil claim."

I laughed.

"From jail?"

"Through counsel."

"For what?"

"Spousal support."

I stopped laughing.

Rebecca didn't.

"Don't worry. You need to read the filing."

"Why?"

"Because Trevor just put his entire fraudulent timeline into a sworn document."

And that mistake was about to cost him far more than money.
