Chapter 3 - The Ballroom That Worked Twice

The accounting office looked as though no one had touched it.

That was the unsettling part.

Nothing was overturned.

No drawers hung open.

No papers scattered across the floor.

Three metal file cabinets stood neatly against the wall.

Inside the middle cabinet were eleven empty folders.

Each labeled VANTAGE HOSPITALITY SERVICES.

Luca stood in the doorway.

Dominic leaned against a desk.

Elena examined the folders without touching them.

"Who knew we were coming here?" Luca asked.

The security manager, Robert Chase, answered.

"Everyone at dinner knew you left the room. But nobody knew you were heading to accounting."

"Who has key access?"

"Finance. Senior operations. Executive management."

"How many people?"

"Twenty-three."

Elena looked at the badge reader beside the door.

"Electronic?"

"Yes."

"Then you know who entered."

Chase's hesitation answered first.

Luca noticed.

"What?"

"The access log is down."

Dominic actually laughed.

Elena turned toward him.

"Something funny?"

"A malfunction becomes a conspiracy now?"

"Files disappear exactly when questions begin, and the electronic log happens to stop working."

Dominic shrugged.

"Old building."

Elena looked around the pristine modern office.

"Of course."

Luca took out his phone.

"Lock all administrative exits."

Dominic straightened.

"You can't trap employees in a hotel because some paperwork was misplaced."

"I'm not trapping anyone."

Luca looked at Chase.

"No searches. No intimidation. Anyone who wants to leave can leave. Record who goes."

"Yes, sir."

Dominic's shoulders relaxed slightly.

Elena caught that too.

The man was careful about appearances.

Careful about technicalities.

She filed it away.

"Security cameras?" she asked.

Chase nodded.

"Hallway coverage."

"Let's see it."

Dominic sighed.

"I'm going back to dinner."

"No," Luca said.

One word.

Dominic stared at him.

"I'm your uncle, Luca."

"And you're head of finance."

"You think that makes me a suspect?"

"It makes you relevant."

Dominic's eyes went cold.

For the first time Elena understood how dangerous family loyalty could become when mixed with power.

Dominic had known Luca since he was a boy.

Maybe raised him in part.

Maybe protected him.

Maybe manipulated him.

That history stood between them like another person.

Luca did not flinch.

"Security room," he said.

They walked downstairs.

The Moretti Grand after nine o'clock was a living machine.

Guests saw chandeliers and marble.

Elena saw dozens of moving systems.

Banquet servers changing shifts.

Cooks rolling speed racks.

Housekeepers communicating on radios.

Bell staff sorting luggage.

Security crossing between public elegance and hidden corridors.

Fraud inside a hotel was never completely invisible.

Someone always saw a cart.

Someone noticed a worker.

Someone signed a key out.

The question was whether anyone had realized what they were seeing.

Inside security, Chase pulled up the hallway outside accounting.

8:41 p.m.

Employees passed.

8:48.

A woman pushing a mail cart.

8:52.

An accountant.

8:57.

The image flickered.

Then froze.

At 8:58, the screen went black.

It returned at 9:09.

Eleven minutes gone.

Elena looked at Luca.

"When did we leave dinner?"

"Eight-fifty-five."

Chase checked his watch history.

"Approximately."

Dominic folded his arms.

"Convenient."

Elena looked at him.

"For whom?"

Before he could answer, Chase zoomed in on the final frame before the interruption.

A figure had appeared at the far end of the corridor.

Only partially visible.

Dark suit.

Male.

Carrying something.

A file box.

"Can you enhance it?" Luca asked.

"Maybe."

Chase adjusted contrast.

The face remained obscured.

But the man's right hand was visible.

A ring.

Large.

Square.

Black stone.

Dominic's hands were both visible.

No ring.

Elena noticed Luca notice.

Dominic smiled.

"Disappointed?"

"No," Elena said.

"Should I be?"

"You've decided I'm guilty."

"I've decided you dislike questions."

"Most intelligent men do."

"I'm not a man."

"Clearly."

Luca's gaze snapped toward his uncle.

Dominic raised both hands.

"Relax. She can defend herself."

Elena answered before Luca could.

"I've spent my whole career defending myself from men who assume the woman carrying a seating chart is somebody's assistant."

She stepped closer to Dominic.

"You don't bother me."

"Good."

"But your invoices do."

His smile disappeared.

Chase interrupted.

"There's another camera."

He switched angles.

Loading corridor.

At 9:03, a man crossed carrying a file box.

Again, no clear face.

Then he pushed through a service door.

"Where does that lead?" Elena asked.

"Freight elevators."

They watched.

At 9:05 the same man entered the underground loading level.

This camera caught his back.

Medium build.

Dark suit.

Short hair.

No identifying face.

He placed the file box on a cart and pushed it toward Dock Three.

Then the camera died.

"How many cameras failed?" Luca asked.

"Three."

"For exactly the same window?"

"Yes."

Dominic shook his head.

"This is absurd."

Elena was thinking about something else.

"Dock Three."

Chase looked at her.

"What?"

"Who was scheduled there?"

He searched the system.

His fingers stopped.

"No delivery."

"Pickup?"

"No."

"Then why that dock?"

No one answered.

Elena leaned over the screen.

"Pull May seventeenth."

Chase frowned.

"The gala date?"

"Yes."

He searched archived footage.

Nothing.

"How long do you retain?"

"One hundred twenty days."

"May should be there."

"It should."

"But it isn't."

Chase tried another date from the ledger.

Missing.

Third date.

Missing.

Every night associated with a suspicious emergency invoice had gaps in security storage.

Not whole nights.

Only specific blocks.

Thirty minutes here.

Forty-two minutes there.

Always centered around service corridors.

Luca stood behind Elena, silent.

She could almost feel anger gathering in him.

Not explosive anger.

Worse.

Controlled anger.

"What about ballroom event records?" she asked.

Chase pulled up internal scheduling.

May seventeenth.

Grand North Gala.

412 guests.

End time: 11:38 p.m.

Elena pointed at the ledger.

Emergency turnover billed at 8:15.

Three hours and twenty-three minutes before the final guest left.

"Impossible," Chase said.

"Exactly."

Dominic stepped toward the door.

"This proves a bad timestamp."

Elena looked at him.

"Four bad timestamps?"

"Software migration."

"Missing video too?"

"Unrelated."

"And missing vendor files?"

"Probably unrelated."

She smiled.

"You're having terrible luck."

Dominic's expression hardened.

Before he could respond, Luca's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

"Send it."

A message arrived.

He opened an attachment.

Elena watched his eyes scan the page.

"What?"

He handed her the phone.

It was a scan of a payment authorization.

Vantage Hospitality Services.

$48,000.

Approver signature at bottom.

L. MORETTI.

Elena looked at Luca.

"That's yours?"

"It looks like mine."

"Looks?"

"I didn't sign it."

Dominic moved closer.

"Let me see."

Luca didn't hand him the phone.

Elena enlarged the signature.

"Digital?"

"Physical scan," Luca said.

"Where was the original?"

"Missing with the files."

Elena stared at the signature.

Forgery explained approval.

It didn't explain how someone knew exactly how Luca signed.

She looked at Chase.

"Who handles documents Luca signs?"

"Executive office. Legal. Finance."

Dominic said, "Half the hotel has seen his signature."

"Seeing isn't the same as reproducing."

Luca's phone rang again.

This time Chase's radio went off simultaneously.

A voice crackled.

"Mr. Chase, we found the file box."

Everyone went still.

"Where?"

"Dock Three."

Elena felt her pulse rise.

"Contents?"

The radio went silent for a moment.

Then:

"Empty."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"There was an envelope taped inside."

"For who?"

Another pause.

Chase looked at Luca.

The radio answered.

"Ms. Elena Russo."

Anthony had finally caught up with them.

He entered security just in time to hear the name.

"What does that mean?"

No one answered.

Ten minutes later the envelope lay on a conference table.

Elena's full name was typed on the front.

Not handwritten.

No return address.

Luca told Chase to photograph it before opening.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

Three lines.

GO HOME, ELENA.

THE MORETTI BOOKS ARE NOT YOUR PROBLEM.

THE NEXT FALL MAY HURT MORE THAN YOUR KNEE.

Anthony went white.

Luca's expression became terrifyingly calm.

Dominic read over his shoulder.

"That could be anyone."

Elena looked at him.

"Very insightful."

Anthony grabbed her arm.

"We're leaving."

She pulled away.

"For once tonight, don't decide for me."

"This is a threat."

"Yes."

"Then we're going."

Elena stared at the paper again.

Someone had watched her enter.

Someone knew she'd fallen.

Someone had access to hotel records.

Someone had removed files after hearing her questions.

The sensible thing was to leave.

She knew that.

She also knew whoever wrote the note expected fear to finish what secrecy had started.

Luca stood beside her.

"I'll have a car take you home."

She looked up.

"Are you ordering me?"

"No."

"Good."

"I'm asking."

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent this thinks you're involved now."

"I am involved."

"You don't owe my family anything."

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

Then she looked at the forged signature on his phone.

"No."

She folded the threatening note once.

"But somebody stole from your hotel."

Twice.

"But somebody used your name to do it."

A third fold.

"And somebody just made the mistake of telling me I wouldn't understand a problem in my own profession."

Anthony groaned.

"Elena."

She slipped the note into the evidence sleeve Chase had provided.

"I'm not leaving because someone typed a scary sentence."

Luca studied her.

"What are you going to do?"

She looked at the blue ledger.

"Find out how a ballroom worked twice in the same hour."

Then Chase's computer chimed.

A new search result had appeared from archived vendor records.

He leaned forward.

"What is it?" Luca asked.

Chase stared.

"Vantage's original registration."

"Whose name?"

Chase slowly turned the monitor.

The company had been formed nine years earlier.

Registered agent:

D. MORETTI.

Anthony stopped breathing.

Dominic stared at the screen.

May you like

And Elena realized they had just found the first direct connection to Luca's uncle.
