Chapter 16 - One Last Impossible Banquet

Northbridge did not enforce the Russo debt that morning.
Margaret Sloan suspended the vote.
Twenty-four hours.
Enough time for independent counsel to review beneficial ownership.
Dominic left without speaking to Elena.
Nicolas disconnected from London.
The Russo hotels were still in danger.
But the clock had slowed.
Then a new problem arrived.
The Moretti Grand was hosting its largest event of the year that evening.
The Metropolitan Children's Foundation Gala.
Eight hundred guests.
Three ballrooms.
Press.
Donors.
Politicians.
Corporate executives.
Canceling would create chaos.
Proceeding while fraud investigations shook management was equally dangerous.
Elena expected Luca to postpone.
He didn't.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because eight hundred guests aren't responsible for my family."
Fair.
"And because Dominic used big events as cover," he added.
Elena understood.
"If the network is still active..."
"They may use tonight."
One last impossible banquet.
They prepared quietly.
No dramatic traps.
No bait involving criminal conduct.
Just controls.
Every loading entrance monitored.
Every vendor credential verified.
Every invoice logged in real time.
Every inventory transfer photographed.
Elena ran banquet operations alongside Moretti's legitimate team.
For the first time, staff saw her not as a mysterious proposed bride.
As an operator.
She was good.
Luca watched from a distance for ten minutes before she finally asked, "What?"
"Nothing."
"You're staring."
"I'm observing."
"That's a creepy synonym."
He smiled.
A captain interrupted.
"Ms. Russo, ballroom C wants two extra tables."
"Do they have space?"
"Barely."
"No. Fire lane."
"They're insisting."
"Then they can insist at the existing tables."
The captain grinned.
"Yes, ma'am."
Luca looked amused.
"You enjoy saying no."
"When it's correct."
At 7:40 p.m., guests filled the ballrooms.
At 8:02, first course cleared.
At 8:15, Elena checked her watch.
The infamous time.
Nothing happened.
At 8:19, Chase called.
"Truck at Dock Three."
Elena's pulse jumped.
"Vendor?"
"Hartwell AV."
One of the suspect companies.
"Scheduled?"
"No."
"Hold them."
"Already."
Documents claimed emergency audio replacement for Grand North.
Cost:
$49,600.
Elena stared.
"They're doing it again."
Luca's face hardened.
"Tonight?"
"Maybe because they think records are about to disappear."
Or because someone wanted one last payment before accounts froze.
The truck contained legitimate audio equipment.
But Grand North did not need it.
No equipment had failed.
Invoice still bore an emergency authorization.
Approver:
Elena Russo.
She laughed.
Luca didn't.
"They forged your name."
"Apparently I've arrived."
Her signature was crude.
But the message was clear.
Implicate her.
If the payment processed, Elena would appear part of the scheme.
If investigators found it later, Dominic could argue she invented allegations to hide her own fraud.
"Don't stop the process yet," Elena said.
Luca frowned.
"Why?"
"Whoever arranged this expects someone inside to accept it."
Chase monitored.
The driver called someone.
Then waited.
At 8:31, an assistant purchasing manager came downstairs.
Young.
Nervous.
He looked at the invoice.
Scanned it.
Then refused.
Good.
He called his supervisor.
No answer.
Then received a text.
Camera caught his face changing.
He signed.
Elena swore softly.
"Who texted him?"
Chase obtained phone preservation through company policy and legal process.
The message came from a masked internal messaging account.
APPROVED BY E. RUSSO. PROCESS IMMEDIATELY.
The truck unloaded.
Equipment moved inside.
Then the driver returned to the truck with something he had not arrived carrying.
A black equipment case.
Chase stopped him before departure.
Inside?
Moretti server backup drives.
The fraud network wasn't trying to steal money this time.
They were removing data.
Luca stared at the case.
"Which servers?"
"Finance archive."
Of course.
"Who gave them access?"
The purchasing manager collapsed under questioning.
He had received instructions from a senior executive.
Not Dominic.
Not Nicolas.
A woman.
Catherine Moretti.
Luca's sister.
He went pale.
Elena had met Catherine once at dinner.
Forty.
Elegant.
Married.
Connecticut.
Barely spoke.
"Call her," Luca said.
Catherine answered.
She sounded confused.
"What invoice?"
Luca put her on speaker.
"Did you authorize Hartwell AV?"
"No."
"Did you message purchasing?"
"No."
"Where are you?"
"Home."
"Can you prove it?"
A pause.
"Why are you talking to me like a suspect?"
"Because your credentials were used."
Catherine started crying.
Someone had compromised her account.
Another stolen identity.
Dominic's pattern.
Use family.
Use employees.
Spread culpability.
Make truth difficult.
Chase's team traced the login.
Internal network.
Executive suite.
The Moretti Grand.
Someone was inside.
Security swept offices.
At 9:02, they found Nicolas Vale.
Not London.
He had never boarded the flight.
A proxy had created electronic evidence of international travel while Nicolas remained in New York.
The man with the black ring sat in Luca's father's old office.
A laptop open.
Financial systems on screen.
When Luca entered, Nicolas smiled.
"Finally."
No struggle.
No weapon.
Just two cousins facing each other.
Elena stayed near the doorway with Chase and counsel.
Luca looked at Nicolas.
"You used Catherine's credentials."
"She uses the same password everywhere."
"Why come here?"
"To fix your mess."
"My mess?"
Nicolas laughed.
"Look at you. Chasing invoices because a woman embarrassed your uncle at dinner."
Elena stepped inside.
"That description is almost flattering."
Nicolas glanced at her.
"You should have married him quietly."
"Not my style."
"No."
His eyes hardened.
"You always needed to be important."
Elena stared.
"You've never met me."
"I've heard about you for years."
Dominic.
Of course.
Nicolas looked back at Luca.
"Your father was weak."
Luca's face went still.
"He wanted legitimacy so badly he forgot what built this family."
"And you remember?"
"Someone had to."
"You stole from us."
"I moved resources."
"Dominic's phrase."
Nicolas smiled.
"We learned from the same people."
There it was.
Partnership.
Luca asked, "Did you threaten Elena?"
"No."
"Did you send the dress?"
Nicolas's smile returned.
"That was funny."
Luca took one step forward.
Elena touched his arm.
Not to protect Nicolas.
To remind Luca what mattered.
Evidence.
Control.
He stopped.
"Why the Russo debt?" Elena asked.
Nicolas looked at her.
"Expansion."
"Of fraud?"
"Of leverage."
"What does that mean?"
"It means hotels are useful."
"For money laundering?" she asked.
He smiled but didn't answer.
Elena didn't pursue methods.
The financial investigators could establish legal details.
"What did Dominic get?"
"Security."
"What did you get?"
"Scale."
"And Luca?"
Nicolas looked at his cousin.
"A wife."
The contempt in his voice made Luca's face harden.
Nicolas continued.
"The giant finally gets someone who can't afford to reject him."
Elena's anger arrived cleanly.
She stepped forward.
"You really don't understand any of us."
Nicolas raised an eyebrow.
"I rejected the contract."
"Your hotels disappear."
"Maybe."
"Your father loses everything."
"Maybe."
"And you think Luca will still want you?"
Elena smiled.
"That's where you're confused."
Nicolas waited.
"Luca was the first man in this entire arrangement who never acted entitled to an answer."
She looked at Luca.
"He didn't need my family bankrupt to keep me in a room."
Something passed between them.
Then Elena turned back to Nicolas.
"You built your plan around the idea that everyone can be controlled by fear."
Nicolas's smile weakened.
"Your problem is that sometimes people choose to lose the thing you're threatening."
The door opened.
Keene entered with investigators.
Nicolas's face changed for the first time.
"What's this?"
"Independent forensic counsel," Keene said. "And authorities with appropriate process regarding evidence preservation and suspected financial fraud."
Nicolas looked at Luca.
"You brought outsiders into family business."
Luca answered quietly.
"You made theft family business."
Nicolas was escorted out for formal questioning.
No dramatic violence.
No gunfire.
No revenge.
Just a man who had spent years hiding inside a powerful surname discovering that paperwork could close doors more effectively than fear.
Elena looked at the ballroom clock.
9:41.
Eight hundred guests upstairs were eating dessert.
The event had never stopped.
Staff kept working.
Music kept playing.
And the Moretti empire had not collapsed because Luca chose accountability.
It had begun changing.
Then Priya called.
"Beneficial ownership review is complete."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"Northbridge?"
"Dominic and Nicolas together control sixty-three percent."
Enough.
"Meaning the debt acceleration?"
"Invalid under the transfer covenant."
Elena closed her eyes.
The Russo hotels were safe from immediate seizure.
For the first time since the ivory dress, she could breathe.
But Priya continued.
"There's another finding."
Elena laughed tiredly.
"There always is."
"Dominic transferred his Northbridge shares this afternoon."
"To whom?"
Priya answered.
"Luca."
Everyone stared at him.
"What?" Luca said.
"Your uncle just made you the largest direct owner of the company that holds Elena's family debt."
Elena looked at Luca.
After everything, Dominic had found one final way to bind them financially.
May you like
And tomorrow, the world would believe Luca Moretti owned the debt that had almost forced Elena Russo to marry him.
