Chapter 9 - The Marriage Contract

Anthony denied everything.
At first.
He stood in Elena's apartment at seven-thirty in the morning, hair disheveled, tie gone, staring at the corporate filing Luca had sent.
"I've never seen this."
"Your name is on it."
"Then someone used my name."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I don't even know what Northbridge does."
"It owns our debt."
His face emptied.
"What?"
Elena watched closely.
Shock could be acted.
But Anthony had never been good at lying to her.
Not directly.
He lied by omission.
He minimized.
He delayed.
He hid things under the word later.
This looked different.
"You truly didn't know."
"No."
"Why is your name there?"
"I don't know."
Luca arrived ten minutes later with an attorney named Samuel Keene.
Keene was in his forties, calm, precise, and apparently one of the few lawyers in the Moretti orbit who had never worked directly for Dominic.
He placed documents across Elena's dining table.
Anthony's signature appeared on a Northbridge ownership agreement.
Anthony stared.
"That's my signature."
Elena's heart dropped.
"But I didn't sign this."
"Could you have signed a packet containing it?" Keene asked.
Anthony sat slowly.
"Dominic brought refinancing documents last year."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Of course he did."
"There were dozens of pages."
"Did you read them?"
"I reviewed the financing sections."
"That's a no."
"I had counsel."
"Whose?"
Anthony looked embarrassed.
"Dominic recommended him."
Keene's expression said everything.
Luca stood near the window, arms folded.
Anthony whispered, "What did I sign?"
Keene explained.
A small equity interest in Northbridge had been assigned to Anthony through a holding structure.
On paper, it created alignment between borrower and investor.
In reality, it implicated him.
"If regulators investigate," Elena said, "you look like you profited from the company squeezing our family."
Anthony's face turned gray.
"I never received money."
"Maybe you were never supposed to."
Luca finally spoke.
"Maybe you were supposed to be leverage."
Anthony looked at him.
"Against who?"
"Your father. Elena. Me."
Dominic built systems where everyone had enough involvement to fear exposure.
Bale signed invoices.
Anthony signed ownership papers.
Victor participated in financing talks.
Luca's signature was forged.
Camille accepted debt relief.
Each person carried a fragment of shame.
That was how silence survived.
Elena remembered the dinner.
The white dress.
The families.
"What happens if Luca and I marry?"
Keene looked uncomfortable.
"Financially?"
"Yes."
Luca said, "There is a proposed partnership agreement."
Elena turned slowly.
"You've seen it."
"Last week."
"And?"
"I hadn't signed."
"You didn't think to mention it?"
"I learned six hours ago you weren't told about the marriage."
Fair.
Still infuriating.
"Do you have it?"
Keene opened his briefcase.
The document was ninety-two pages.
Elena laughed.
"Nothing says love like ninety-two pages."
Anthony didn't smile.
They reviewed the structure.
If Elena and Luca married, Moretti Holdings would inject $30 million into a joint hospitality entity.
The Russo hotels would contribute their properties.
Moretti would provide management systems and preferred vendors.
Dominic Moretti was named interim integration director.
Elena pointed.
"There."
Luca nodded.
Dominic would gain operational authority across Russo properties.
Including vendor onboarding.
Including maintenance.
Banquets.
Procurement.
Everything he needed.
"How long?" Elena asked.
"Twenty-four months."
"Enough time to bury millions."
Anthony looked sick.
"Why did Dad agree?"
"Because without the money we default," Elena said.
Keene flipped farther.
"There is another section."
Change-of-control provisions.
If certain debt covenants were triggered before marriage completion, Northbridge could accelerate the Russo loans.
"If we refused the arrangement?" Elena asked.
"Northbridge could call the debt."
"If we accepted?"
"Moretti money pays Northbridge."
"So Dominic wins either way."
Keene nodded.
Elena looked at Luca.
"What happens if you refuse?"
"My family loses nothing financially."
"Then why involve you?"
Luca had clearly been asking himself the same question.
Anthony answered.
"Succession."
Everyone looked at him.
"What?"
Anthony leaned forward.
"Dominic always talked about stability."
Luca's face hardened.
"What did he say?"
"That older Moretti partners were nervous because you weren't married."
"Partners don't control my personal life."
"Maybe not. But he said marriage would calm lenders and families."
Elena thought of Camille.
The women who walked away.
Dominic had sabotaged potential marriages.
Then engineered one he could control.
Why?
Because Elena came attached to distressed assets.
A bride and an acquisition.
Luca paced once across the room.
"He needed me unmarried until the Russo debt matured."
Elena looked at him.
"Then he needed a specific marriage."
"Yes."
Anthony whispered, "This is insane."
"No," Elena said.
"That's the problem."
She looked at the ninety-two pages.
"It's organized."
Her phone rang.
Her father.
She nearly ignored it.
Then answered.
Victor sounded breathless.
"Elena, don't sign anything."
"I'm aware."
"I found something."
"What?"
"An old email."
"From Dominic?"
"From Matteo."
Luca immediately turned.
"When?"
"Six years ago."
"Send it."
A minute later the message arrived.
Matteo Moretti had emailed Victor Russo twelve days before his death.
Victor,
Do not accept any financing structure Dominic brings you involving Northbridge, Vantage, or Merrick. I am reviewing serious irregularities. We should speak directly next week.
Do not copy anyone.
Matteo
Luca read the email three times.
"Why didn't your father show you this?"
Elena looked furious.
"That's an excellent question."
Victor remained on speaker.
"I forgot it existed."
"How do you forget this?"
"Because Matteo died before we met. Dominic told me Matteo had been confused during his final weeks."
Luca went still.
"What?"
"He said your father's health was affecting his judgment."
Luca's eyes darkened.
Victor continued.
"I believed him."
"Did you answer Matteo?"
"Yes."
"What did you say?"
"I agreed to meet."
"Did Dominic know?"
"I don't think so."
Elena looked at the date.
Matteo had died twelve days later.
Bale said Matteo confronted him three days before death.
The old man had been closing in.
"Anything else?" Luca asked.
Victor hesitated.
"Yes."
"What?"
"The morning after Matteo died, Dominic called me."
Everyone stopped.
"What did he say?"
"He said any concerns Matteo had raised were misunderstandings."
Luca's voice went dangerously quiet.
"How did he know Matteo contacted you?"
Victor didn't answer.
Because there was no innocent explanation.
The email had been private.
Unless someone accessed Matteo's communications.
Luca ended the call.
No goodbye.
Elena watched him.
He walked to the far side of the room.
She wanted to reach for him.
She didn't.
This wasn't a moment to assume touch was comfort.
After a minute, he turned.
"We secure everything today."
Keene nodded.
"Independent forensic team."
"Outside New York."
"Agreed."
"Copy the ghost ledgers."
"Yes."
"Freeze vendor payments."
"That may alert Dominic."
"Good."
Elena stepped in.
"No."
Luca looked at her.
"We don't alert him yet."
"Why?"
"Because we don't know where the money ends."
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
She pointed at the marriage contract.
"If Dominic thinks we're still confused, he keeps moving normally."
Luca understood.
"You want him to believe the deal is alive."
Anthony stared.
"You're not seriously suggesting—"
"No marriage."
Elena's voice was firm.
"But negotiations."
Luca looked at her.
A slow understanding passed between them.
They would pretend to continue.
Allow Dominic to believe the plan survived.
Watch what he did.
Keene objected.
"That's risky."
"So is letting him destroy evidence," Elena said.
Luca considered.
"What would convince him?"
Elena looked at the white dress hanging over a chair.
Then at Luca.
"Public dinner."
Anthony stared.
"Again?"
"This time I know why I'm there."
Luca said, "He'll expect progress."
"Give him progress."
"What kind?"
Elena smiled.
Not warmly.
"The kind that makes an arrogant man think he won."
That afternoon Dominic received a message from Luca.
Dinner tomorrow.
Both families.
We will discuss terms.
Dominic answered within thirty seconds.
Excellent.
Then another message appeared.
Bring the marriage contract.
Elena stared at the screen.
Luca asked, "Still want to do this?"
She looked at him.
"I'd like to read all ninety-two pages first."
"Romantic."
"You're learning."
Then Keene, who had been reviewing the final annexes, suddenly stopped.
"Wait."
"What?"
He turned the contract around.
Attached to the marriage agreement was a pre-authorized vendor list for the combined hotel company.
Thirty-seven vendors.
Elena ran her finger down them.
Vantage.
Merrick Facilities.
Blue Crown Linen.
Hartwell AV.
And one name that made her freeze.
Santos Hospitality Staffing.
"Maria Santos?" Luca asked.
Elena shook her head.
"No."
The housekeeping supervisor had said her name was Maria Santos.
Someone had created a company using her identity.
A woman who had worked at the Moretti Grand for twenty-three years.
A woman Dominic had tried to silence.
May you like
And according to the contract, her fake company was scheduled to receive exclusive staffing rights across every Russo hotel the day Elena married Luca.
