Chapter 11 - Vendors That Did Not Exist

Luca returned Elena's call fourteen minutes later.

She answered on the first ring.

"Where are you?"

"Attorney's office."

"Did your father write my name in the ghost ledger?"

Silence.

That was enough.

Her chest tightened.

"Luca."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I found it this morning."

"When?"

"After I dropped you home."

"That's not an answer to why."

"Because I didn't understand it yet."

Elena stood.

"Send me the page."

"Come here."

"No."

"Elena."

"Send it."

Thirty seconds later her phone vibrated.

Photograph.

Matteo's handwriting.

E. Russo — banquet management, Midtown. D. asked unusual questions re: her authority. Why?

Another entry months later:

D. says Elena would make Victor easier to control. Disturbing.

Elena read it twice.

Then three times.

Dominic had been watching her years before the marriage arrangement.

Not romantically.

Operationally.

Because she was a weakness or obstacle within the Russo family.

She called Luca again.

"Why was he interested in my authority?"

"I don't know."

"I think I do."

Elena remembered the abandoned Midtown expansion.

She had opposed outside banquet management.

At twenty-five, she had insisted vendors be vetted internally.

She had rejected a proposed preferred staffing company because its rates made no sense.

What was the company's name?

She searched old email.

Thousands of messages.

Then found it.

Merrick Event Services.

Dominic's network.

She had blocked one of his companies without ever knowing.

Seven years ago.

"Dominic knew me because I rejected his vendor."

Luca was silent.

"Say that again."

She explained.

Merrick had proposed a bundled staffing contract.

Elena had refused.

Their references didn't check out.

Two weeks later her father paused the expansion.

Months later Arcadia left.

Dominic had identified her as operational resistance.

"I wasn't a bride candidate," Elena whispered.

"Not then."

"I was a problem."

Luca's voice hardened.

"Apparently."

That afternoon the forensic accountants delivered preliminary findings.

Vantage was only the center.

The network contained at least twenty-three shell or compromised vendors.

Some existed legally but performed minimal work.

Others borrowed employee identities.

Three had addresses linked to properties controlled by Merrick.

Two were registered to deceased individuals.

One supposedly operated from a closed laundromat in Queens.

Estimated questionable payments over nine years:

$18.4 million.

Elena stared at the number.

"How did nobody see this?"

The lead accountant, Priya Shah, answered.

"Fragmentation."

Different departments.

Different payment codes.

Different legal entities.

Most transactions under individual review thresholds.

"And Dominic controlled enough systems to stop anyone from seeing the whole picture," Elena said.

Priya nodded.

"Exactly."

Luca stood at the end of the table.

"What about six million?"

Elena looked at him.

He had remembered the voicemail.

Priya searched.

"There is a six-million transfer."

"Where?"

"Seven years ago. Moretti Hospitality investment account to an entity called Atlas Reserve."

"Who owns Atlas?"

"Still tracing."

"Purpose?"

"Strategic property acquisition."

Luca frowned.

"I don't recognize it."

Priya continued.

"Three weeks later Atlas transferred $5.7 million to Northbridge."

Elena's pulse accelerated.

"Northbridge existed seven years ago."

"Yes."

Before Northbridge owned Russo debt.

Before the marriage plan.

"What happened to the other three hundred thousand?" Luca asked.

"Fees."

"Who authorized the six million?"

Priya turned the monitor.

Matteo Moretti.

Luca stared.

"My father?"

"Signature appears valid."

This complicated everything.

Had Matteo participated initially?

Maybe the anonymous caller wanted that conclusion.

Elena studied the date.

"Could Matteo have believed it was a property investment?"

"Possible," Priya said.

"What did Atlas buy?"

"Nothing we can find."

"Then maybe someone presented Northbridge as something else."

Luca's phone buzzed.

Message from Chase.

The linen delivery had arrived.

They watched remotely.

A white box truck entered Dock Three at 1:13 p.m.

Two men unloaded the same linens Elena had seen stored inside the hotel six hours earlier.

The absurdity was breathtaking.

Receiving clerk scanned them.

Supervisor signed.

Then a man appeared.

Thomas Bale.

Elena frowned.

"I thought he was cooperating."

Chase's voice came through speaker.

"He asked to participate."

Bale spoke with the drivers.

One handed him an envelope.

Chase zoomed camera.

Cash?

Documents?

Bale looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Then touched his tie.

Signal.

Chase moved.

Security approached.

The drivers ran.

One made it to the truck.

The other froze.

No fight.

No weapons.

Within minutes both were detained for police questioning.

The envelope contained payment instructions.

Vantage invoice.

$38,700.

Bank transfer destination.

Not Hudson Metropolitan.

A Caribbean financial institution.

Priya took the details.

"This could be the exit route."

Luca nodded.

"Trace it."

Bale entered the conference room thirty minutes later.

He looked shaken.

"Dominic knows."

Everyone froze.

"How?" Luca asked.

"I got a call."

"From him?"

"No. Blocked."

"What did they say?"

Bale swallowed.

"They told me I chose the wrong Moretti."

Luca's face went cold.

Elena asked, "Why assume Dominic?"

"I don't."

That was unsettling.

"Then who else?"

Bale shook his head.

"I don't know."

Priya looked up from her laptop.

"I may."

They turned.

The Caribbean account had an authorized intermediary.

Not Dominic.

Not Merrick.

A company called Vale Strategic.

Owner:

Nicolas Vale.

Luca went completely still.

Elena noticed immediately.

"Who is he?"

Luca didn't answer.

"Luca."

"My cousin."

"Another cousin?"

"My mother's sister's son."

"Close?"

"We grew up together."

"Does he work with you?"

"He runs international logistics."

Priya pulled records.

Vale Strategic had received transfers linked to Vantage for five years.

$3.1 million.

Bale whispered, "I never dealt with Nicolas."

Luca looked stunned.

Elena remembered something from the dinner.

A man behind Luca.

Dark suit.

Square black ring.

The blurry security footage.

"Does Nicolas wear a ring?"

Luca looked at her.

"Black onyx."

Chase pulled up the camera image.

Square black stone.

The man removing Vantage files had worn Nicolas Vale's ring.

Dominic might be at the center.

But he wasn't alone.

The network was a family ecosystem.

Before anyone could speak, Luca's phone rang.

Nicolas Vale.

Luca stared at the screen.

Then answered on speaker.

"Cousin."

Nicolas sounded relaxed.

"Big dinner tomorrow."

"Apparently."

"I hear congratulations may be in order."

Elena looked at Luca.

"Maybe."

Nicolas laughed.

"Dominic finally found a woman brave enough."

Elena's jaw tightened.

Luca asked, "Where are you?"

"Airport."

"Going?"

"London."

"When do you leave?"

"In twenty."

Luca and Chase exchanged a look.

Nicolas continued.

"Why?"

"No reason."

A pause.

Then Nicolas said, "Tell Elena ivory suits her."

The call ended.

Elena felt cold.

Nicolas had not been near the original dinner table when she fell.

At least she had not seen him.

Yet he knew what she wore.

Maybe cameras.

Maybe reports.

Or maybe he had been watching.

Chase checked airport records.

Nicolas had a private flight scheduled.

Luca reached for his coat.

Elena stopped him.

"If you chase him, Dominic knows."

"If I don't, he leaves."

"Let him."

Luca stared.

"What?"

"People who think they've escaped make mistakes."

Priya nodded slowly.

"If we can monitor transfers, international movement may expose accounts."

Luca hated it.

Elena could see that.

But finally he sat down.

"Track everything legally available."

Chase nodded.

That evening, Elena returned home to prepare for the family dinner.

On her bed waited a garment box.

No sender.

Inside was another ivory dress.

Different from the first.

Elegant.

Expensive.

Attached note:

FOR TOMORROW.

A MORETTI BRIDE SHOULD LOOK THE PART.

Elena didn't touch it.

She called Chase.

Security arrived.

The box had been delivered by courier.

Sender information fake.

But beneath the tissue paper they found something else.

A copy of the ninety-two-page marriage contract.

One section highlighted.

Upon legal union, Elena Russo shall resign operational authority from Russo Hospitality during the integration period.

Elena read the sentence slowly.

There it was.

The true purpose.

Dominic had noticed her seven years ago because she blocked his vendor.

Now the marriage agreement would remove her from operations entirely.

He wasn't bringing Elena into the Moretti empire.

He was using marriage to push her out of her own.

And suddenly tomorrow's dinner wasn't merely bait.

It was the moment Dominic expected Elena Russo to sign away the only thing he had ever feared about her.

May you like

Her ability to see how hotels actually worked.
