Chapter 12 - Why Luca Never Chased a Bride

Elena wore red.

Not ivory.

Not cream.

Not anything that could be mistaken for bridal white.

A deep red evening dress that made her mother gasp when Elena entered the Moretti Grand the following night.

Dominic noticed too.

His smile paused for half a second.

"Beautiful."

"Thank you."

"I sent something more appropriate."

"I know."

"And?"

"It wasn't my color."

Luca appeared at the top of the stairs.

Black tuxedo again.

Same controlled presence.

But tonight Elena knew enough to read the details.

The tension in his shoulders.

The glance toward security.

The way he scanned the room before looking at her.

When his eyes finally landed on Elena's dress, something changed.

"Red."

She smiled.

"Problem?"

"No."

"Good."

He descended.

Dominic watched them closely.

Families gathered.

Anthony looked as though he had slept two hours.

Victor looked ten years older than he had yesterday.

Sofia approached Elena.

"I should have told you."

Elena softened.

"Tonight isn't the time."

"Will there be a time?"

"Yes."

Her mother nodded.

That was all Elena could give.

Dinner took place in the same private room.

This time Elena knew exactly what everyone expected.

Dominic believed desperation would overcome anger.

The Russos needed financing.

Luca supposedly needed a wife.

The marriage contract waited beside his plate.

Dominic lifted his wine.

"To clarity."

Elena almost laughed.

Luca raised his glass.

"To clarity."

They drank.

For forty minutes, no one discussed fraud.

They discussed properties.

Integration.

Debt.

Public announcements.

Elena played cooperative.

Not submissive.

There was a difference.

She asked enough questions to appear engaged.

Dominic relaxed gradually.

Then dessert arrived.

He opened the marriage contract.

"Perhaps we address the personal matter."

Elena looked at Luca.

He looked at her.

They had rehearsed nothing about romance.

Only strategy.

That made the moment unexpectedly awkward.

Dominic smiled.

"Luca?"

Luca put down his fork.

"Elena and I have discussed it."

Her pulse changed.

Technically true.

"We have," she said.

Victor watched nervously.

Dominic leaned forward.

"And?"

Luca's eyes remained on Elena.

"No decision tonight."

Dominic's smile tightened.

"That wasn't our understanding."

"I don't remember asking for your understanding."

Dangerous.

Elena stepped in.

"I have concerns about the integration terms."

Dominic relaxed slightly.

Business territory.

"What concerns?"

"My operational role."

"A temporary structure."

"It removes me."

"Only during consolidation."

"Why?"

"Efficiency."

Elena smiled.

"Whose?"

Dominic glanced at Victor.

"Combining two hotel groups requires clear authority."

"And you have authority."

"Initially."

"Over banquet vendors."

"Among other things."

"So if I marry Luca, you control who supplies my hotels."

"For twenty-four months."

"Why do you care who supplies tablecloths?"

Dominic's eyes sharpened.

"Is this really necessary?"

Luca leaned back.

"I'm interested in the answer."

Dominic looked at him.

Then Elena.

"Preferred vendor agreements create savings."

"Vantage saves money?"

The entire table changed.

Dominic's face stayed controlled.

"Excuse me?"

"Vantage Hospitality."

Victor looked down.

Anthony became very still.

Dominic sipped wine.

"I thought we'd moved beyond your amateur audit."

"We have."

Elena smiled.

"We're at professional audit now."

Luca almost smiled.

Dominic did not.

"You searched company records."

"We reviewed integration vendors."

"You had no authority."

Luca spoke.

"She had mine."

Silence.

Dominic set down his glass.

"And what exactly did you find?"

Elena wanted him to overplay.

Not confess.

Not yet.

"Enough to have questions."

"Then ask."

"Why is a company registered through your dead cousin charging the Grand for emergency labor that never existed?"

Dominic laughed.

"Daniel created Vantage. We've established that."

"Why does Vantage use properties linked to you?"

"Family assets overlap."

"Why does it receive inventory from the Grand and sell the same inventory back?"

That landed.

Dominic's eyes flicked toward Luca.

Tiny.

Quick.

But there.

He knew the linen delivery had been discovered.

"What are you talking about?"

Elena didn't answer.

She moved to another question.

"Why did you tell Luca that my father proposed our marriage?"

Victor looked up.

Dominic's face changed.

Elena continued.

"And why did you tell my father Luca had already agreed?"

Sofia whispered, "What?"

Dominic leaned back.

"Negotiations require diplomacy."

"Lying."

"Call it what you want."

"I do."

Elena looked at everyone.

"Why did you need this marriage?"

Dominic finally lost patience.

"Because both families need stability."

"No."

He stared.

"Mine needs money."

She pointed toward Luca.

"His supposedly needs succession."

Then herself.

"And you need me removed from operations."

Dominic laughed.

"You overestimate your importance."

"Then why is my resignation in the contract?"

"Standard governance."

"It isn't in Anthony's."

Silence.

She had read every page.

"Why only me?"

Dominic looked toward Luca.

"This is becoming embarrassing."

Luca answered.

"For you."

Dominic's composure cracked.

"After everything I've done for this family, you're allowing a woman you've known forty-eight hours to interrogate me?"

There.

Not plus-size woman.

Not unwanted bride.

Not hotel operator.

A woman.

Elena understood the hierarchy inside his head.

Luca spoke slowly.

"I'm allowing no one anything."

"Your father would be disgusted."

Luca's face changed.

Elena saw pain.

Dominic saw opportunity.

He continued.

"Matteo understood loyalty."

Luca stood.

Dominic smiled.

"Sit down."

Everyone froze.

Luca looked at him.

Dominic's confidence returned.

For one second, he spoke to Luca not as an uncle speaking to the head of a family.

As an older man speaking to a boy.

"You are angry."

Luca remained standing.

"Yes."

"You've always made bad decisions when angry."

Elena watched Luca's hands.

Relaxed.

No threat.

Just control.

He said, "My father left records."

Dominic went white.

It happened so quickly that no one could deny it.

Luca continued.

"Ghost ledgers."

Dominic stared.

"Where?"

The question escaped before he could stop it.

Elena felt the entire room understand.

Dominic closed his eyes.

Then laughed once.

"Matteo kept notes about everything. They prove nothing."

"We didn't say what they contain," Elena said.

Dominic looked at her.

Hate appeared now.

Clean and undisguised.

"You."

Luca stepped subtly closer.

Elena didn't need it.

But she noticed.

Dominic whispered, "Seven years ago you ruined a perfect integration because you thought you understood vendor pricing."

Elena's pulse hammered.

There.

Admission.

"You remember."

"Of course I remember."

"You knew me."

"I knew you were difficult."

"Competent."

"Obstructive."

"Same thing to men like you."

Victor stared at Dominic.

"You took Arcadia."

Dominic shrugged.

"Business."

"You destroyed our financing."

"You destroyed your financing. I merely stopped saving you."

Elena looked at Luca.

Chase's team was recording through legally authorized internal security systems in the private company room.

Keene would handle admissibility.

For now, keep him talking.

"Why Vantage?" Elena asked.

Dominic smiled.

"You think you're clever."

"No. I think you're proud."

That worked.

His eyes hardened.

"Hotels waste millions. Every year. Owners don't know where it goes."

"You helped it go."

"I built systems."

"To steal."

"To redirect."

"To yourself."

"To people who kept this family powerful."

Luca's voice was quiet.

"My father discovered it."

Dominic stared at him.

Something older than anger passed between them.

"He discovered pieces."

"Did you access his email?"

Dominic said nothing.

"Did you know he contacted Victor?"

Silence.

"Did you clear his office after he died?"

"Your father was sick."

"That wasn't the question."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

Elena watched Luca.

This was the question beneath every other question.

Had Dominic caused Matteo's death?

Nothing they had found proved that.

And they would not invent it.

Finally Dominic said, "I did not kill my brother."

Brother.

Elena blinked.

Dominic wasn't Matteo's brother.

Wait.

Luca's face shifted.

"You called him your brother."

Dominic swallowed.

"Cousin. You know what I meant."

No.

Something was wrong.

Luca stared at him.

"My father called you brother too."

Dominic looked suddenly tired.

"Because we grew up together."

The room held tension.

But then Dominic stood.

"This dinner is over."

Chase appeared at the doorway.

"No, sir."

Dominic froze.

Two investigators stood behind him.

Keene entered.

"Dominic Moretti, no one is detaining you at this moment. However, company access privileges have been suspended pending investigation."

Dominic looked at Luca.

"You did this."

Luca shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Elena.

"She noticed a line in a ledger."

Dominic's gaze moved to Elena.

Then something unexpected happened.

He smiled.

"Ask him about the six million."

Elena's heart tightened.

Luca's expression remained still.

"We already found it."

Dominic's smile widened.

"Did you?"

"Atlas."

"That's the transfer."

"What are you saying?"

"Ask who Atlas belonged to."

Luca stared.

Dominic buttoned his jacket.

"Your father."

Then he walked toward the door.

Keene stopped him.

"Your building access card."

Dominic removed it.

Before handing it over, he looked at Luca.

"Your father started the system."

Luca's face emptied.

Dominic continued.

"I only improved it."

Then he left.

Nobody spoke for a full minute.

Elena looked at Luca.

He looked almost lost.

She touched his hand for the first time.

Not romantic.

Not yet.

Just human.

"Don't believe him without evidence."

Luca looked down at their hands.

Then back at her.

"That's what you told me about Dominic."

"Yes."

"And you were right."

"Then let evidence decide this too."

He nodded.

Hours later, Priya called.

She had traced Atlas Reserve's original incorporation.

Dominic had told one truth.

Atlas had indeed belonged to Matteo Moretti.

But when Priya found the original six-million-dollar transfer authorization, there were two signatures.

Matteo Moretti.

And a second authorized executive.

Nicolas Vale.

The cousin who had flown to London.

The man with the black ring.

And beside the transfer was a handwritten note from Matteo:

Temporary reserve for acquisition. Nicolas to return funds if deal fails.

The deal had failed.

The money had never returned.

Instead, it became Northbridge.

Matteo had not started the theft.

He had unknowingly funded it.

And Nicolas had helped redirect the money years before Dominic claimed anything was wrong.

Which meant Dominic was not the beginning of the conspiracy.

He had a partner.

May you like

And that partner had just left the country.
