Chapter 14 - The Missing Blue Ledger

Elena wanted to run.

Luca stopped her with one sentence.

"We don't know where."

She hated him for being right.

Chase traced Anthony's phone.

Signal ended inside a multilevel parking structure on East Fifty-Third.

Security teams moved.

Police were notified through Keene.

No secret rescue.

No reckless confrontation.

Elena stood in the Moretti Grand command office staring at the garage layout while every instinct screamed that standing still was betrayal.

"Why Anthony?" she asked.

Luca stood beside her.

"Access."

"He didn't have access until yesterday."

"Someone knew we gave it."

"Then someone is still inside your security system."

Chase heard.

His face tightened.

"We changed permissions."

"Apparently not enough."

Keene entered.

"Police found his car."

Elena turned.

"Anthony?"

"No."

"Ledger?"

"No."

Her stomach dropped.

"There is footage."

They watched.

Anthony drove in alone.

Level four.

Parked.

Waited seven minutes.

A second vehicle arrived.

Black sedan.

A man exited.

Hat.

Coat.

Face partially obscured.

Anthony stepped out carrying the blue ledger inside a bag.

The two spoke.

No visible weapon.

No physical struggle.

Then Anthony willingly entered the other car.

Elena frowned.

"Why would he get in?"

Luca zoomed.

The man showed Anthony something on a phone.

"What?"

No way to tell.

Vehicle plate was obscured.

But the sedan model was distinctive.

Chase searched Moretti fleet records.

No match.

Then Russo company fleet.

One.

Registered to Russo Holdings.

Elena stared.

"Who uses it?"

Chase looked at her.

"Your father."

She called Victor.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Sofia answered.

"Where's Dad?"

"He left an hour ago."

"Where?"

"He said he was meeting Anthony."

Elena nearly dropped the phone.

"When?"

"Anthony called him."

"Mom, listen to me. Stay home. Lock the door. Security is coming."

"What happened?"

"Just do it."

She hung up.

Luca ordered a security team to Sofia.

Keene coordinated with police.

Elena paced.

"My father has been lying for days."

"Yes."

"You think he's involved."

"I think we follow evidence."

She looked at him sharply.

His own words.

Her own lesson.

Evidence.

Not fear.

Not family.

Evidence.

Fifteen minutes later Victor called.

Elena answered.

"Where are you?"

"With Anthony."

"Where?"

"Safe."

"That's not a location."

Victor sounded shaken.

"Elena, I need you to trust me."

She laughed.

"Not available."

"I did something stupid."

"That's a very large category."

"Seven years ago."

Her heart sank.

"What?"

"Dominic asked me to open a vendor account."

"Vantage?"

"No. Atlas Reserve."

Elena stopped.

Luca heard.

He stepped closer.

"What did you do?"

"I introduced him to a banker."

"Why?"

"He said Matteo needed confidentiality for a property acquisition."

The six million.

Victor helped create the path.

"Did you know it went to Northbridge?"

"Not then."

"When did you learn?"

"Two years later."

"And said nothing."

"I confronted Dominic."

"What happened?"

"He showed me records."

"What records?"

"Vantage invoices with my approvals."

Elena felt sick.

Thirty-one invoices.

"He had you trapped."

"Yes."

"Did you actually approve them?"

"Some."

"Knowing they were fake?"

"No."

"Later?"

Victor went silent.

Elena closed her eyes.

"Dad."

"Later I signed three."

Her chest hurt.

"Why?"

"Dominic said if I didn't, he would expose the earlier records and destroy our financing."

"You committed fraud to hide fraud."

"I know."

Anthony's voice appeared in the background.

"Give me the phone."

Then louder:

"Elena?"

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Where are you?"

"Dad's old warehouse office in Queens."

"Why did you leave with that man?"

"That was Dad."

Elena blinked.

The coat and hat.

Victor.

"Why was his plate covered?"

"Dad thought we were being followed."

"Why didn't you call me?"

"Because we found something."

"What?"

"The ledger wasn't stolen from us."

She frowned.

"Anthony, you took it."

"I took the copy."

Silence.

"What?"

"The blue ledger in evidence was a duplicate."

Luca looked at Chase.

Chase looked stunned.

Anthony continued.

"Original has been in Dad's safe for six years."

Elena's knees weakened.

"What are you talking about?"

Victor came back on.

"Matteo gave me a ledger."

"When?"

"Two days before he died."

Everyone froze.

Victor's confession spilled out.

Matteo had asked him to hold a blue financial ledger temporarily.

He believed someone was entering his office.

He told Victor not to open it unless something happened.

Then Matteo died.

Victor panicked.

Dominic approached him the next day.

Asked whether Matteo had left anything.

Victor lied.

For six years he kept the book hidden.

"Why didn't you give it to Luca?"

"I didn't know who to trust."

"You could have told me."

"I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"Because when I finally opened it, my signatures were inside."

Elena understood.

Matteo had documented Victor's involvement.

Some innocent.

Some not.

Victor feared exposure.

So he hid evidence that could also have exposed Dominic.

Shame again.

The glue holding the conspiracy together.

"Why now?" Elena asked.

"Because Anthony showed me the evidence against him. I knew Dominic would try to use us against each other again."

"Bring the ledger."

"We are."

"Police are looking for you."

Victor groaned.

"Of course."

Elena almost laughed from relief and anger at once.

"Stay where you are. Keene will coordinate."

Two hours later the original blue ledger arrived at Keene's office.

It looked almost identical to the one Elena had first seen.

Except older.

Matteo's handwritten annotations filled margins.

Initials.

Arrows.

Questions.

And tucked inside the back cover was a flash drive.

Chase secured it.

Priya opened the files on an isolated system.

Spreadsheets.

Emails.

Scanned invoices.

Bank transfers.

Matteo had built his case.

Then stopped.

The final folder was dated the night before his death.

Inside was an audio recording.

Luca went pale.

"My father?"

Keene asked if he wanted privacy.

Luca shook his head.

"Play it."

Matteo's voice filled the room.

Older.

Raspy.

But clear.

"If you're hearing this, I may not have had time to finish."

Luca closed his eyes.

Elena stood beside him.

The recording continued.

"Dominic believes loyalty means protecting family from consequences. He is wrong."

A pause.

"Nicolas is moving money through Atlas. Dominic knows."

Luca's hand tightened.

"I authorized the original reserve. I did not authorize the transfer to Northbridge."

Another pause.

"I confronted Dominic. He told me the system protects all of us."

Matteo coughed.

"I told him theft does not become loyalty because family benefits."

Then came the line that changed Luca's face.

"I also told him Luca will end it when he learns."

Luca inhaled sharply.

Matteo continued.

"That boy has spent his life being told he is frightening because of how large he is, how quiet he is, what name he carries."

Elena looked at Luca.

"But Luca's problem is not cruelty."

The old man's voice softened.

"It is that he thinks he must carry everything alone."

Luca looked away.

Elena's eyes burned.

Matteo continued.

"If Elena Russo ever becomes involved, listen to her."

Everyone in the room froze.

Elena stared at the speaker.

"She sees operational lies faster than accountants do. Dominic already dislikes her for it."

Her throat closed.

Matteo had known her work.

Not her personally.

Her work.

The recording continued.

"Victor failed to tell his daughter that I asked about her. That was a mistake."

Elena glanced at her father.

He lowered his eyes.

Then Matteo's tone changed.

"One more thing. Dominic is not the only danger."

Silence.

"Nicolas believes he should inherit what Luca has."

Luca's face hardened.

"He will never challenge Luca directly. He will make Luca look incapable, isolate him, weaken the businesses, and let others ask for new leadership."

The recording ended.

No dramatic accusation of murder.

No final clue.

Just a father's warning.

Luca stood completely still.

Then Priya's phone buzzed.

She read an alert.

"Nicolas just moved money."

"How much?"

"Nine million dollars."

"From where?"

"Three network accounts into Northbridge."

Elena looked at the marriage contract.

"Why now?"

Priya's face tightened.

"Because Northbridge just issued a notice."

"To who?"

"The Russo group."

Elena's stomach dropped.

"Calling the debt?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"Forty-eight hours."

Dominic's plan had entered its final phase.

Marry Luca and surrender operational control.

Or watch the Russo hotels collapse.

And now Elena had only two days to decide whether saving her family's business was worth stepping into the exact trap Matteo Moretti had warned them about.
