Chapter 10 - What Happened to Daniel

Miles confessed.
Not immediately.
Lawyers negotiated.
Evidence was verified.
But eventually, the truth emerged.
Daniel Pierce’s death had not been an accident.
Daniel had threatened to report Grant’s financial crimes.
Miles arranged for someone to frighten him.
According to Miles, the intention was intimidation.
The encounter escalated.
Daniel’s vehicle left the road.
Whether Grant explicitly ordered Daniel’s death became contested.
The financial conspiracy, however, was clear.
Grant knew about the plan to silence him.
After Daniel died, Grant helped conceal evidence.
That revelation transformed the case.
Claire had been right.
Daniel died because he knew too much.
And Grant had imprisoned her because she discovered the same secret.
But Miles offered one more piece of evidence.
An audio recording.
Grant’s voice.
Recorded after Daniel’s death.
“Daniel should have understood when to stop.”
Then:
“We cannot make the same mistake with Claire.”
When Claire heard it, she closed her eyes.
Not from fear.
From confirmation.
For months, part of her had wondered whether she had misunderstood everything.
Manipulation does that.
It leaves its victim cross-examining herself long after the abuser is gone.
The recording ended that.
Grant knew.
Grant planned.
Grant chose.
The jury returned after deliberation.
Guilty.
Count after count.
Claire squeezed my hand.
Grant stared forward.
When the final guilty verdict was read, he finally turned toward us.
I expected anger.
Instead, he looked confused.
As though consequences were something that happened to other people.
Sentencing would come later.
Other cases remained.
Financial victims emerged.
Families who had trusted Grant.
Clients whose retirement accounts had been drained.
Doctors whose signatures had been forged.
The scandal became much larger than Claire.
But for me, the only thing that mattered happened outside the courthouse.
Claire stepped into the sunlight.
She inhaled.
And whispered:
“It’s over.”
I wanted to agree.
But then my phone buzzed.
An email.
Anonymous.
