Chapter 7 - The Third Person

The third person was Grant’s attorney.
Not his criminal defense attorney.
His longtime corporate lawyer.
Miles Corbett.
Miles had created the trusts.
The shell companies.
The fake retreat corporation.
He had structured payments to Rebecca.
But investigators initially overlooked him because his work appeared protected by legitimate legal services.
Rebecca changed that.
She told them where to look.
Miles had also arranged the cabin.
He created the fake documents.
And according to Rebecca, he was responsible for Daniel Pierce’s death.
The investigation into Daniel’s crash reopened.
Surveillance footage showed another vehicle near Daniel’s car minutes before the collision.
That vehicle was eventually connected to a company controlled by Miles.
Now prosecutors had leverage.
Rebecca agreed to cooperate.
Miles was arrested.
Grant remained silent.
But silence was becoming expensive.
Because every person around him was talking.
And Claire was getting stronger.
One evening, she sat with me on the porch.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I should have told you.”
“No.”
“I knew something was wrong.”
“So did I.”
“But I stayed.”
I looked at her.
“That isn’t a crime.”
“I feel stupid.”
“Then listen to somebody who prosecuted criminals for thirty-one years.”
She waited.
“Intelligent people can be manipulated. Strong people can be frightened. Successful people can become trapped. None of those things transfer responsibility from the person who chose to hurt them.”
Claire cried quietly.
Then she asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Will I have to testify?”
“Yes.”
She looked terrified.
I held her hand.
“You won’t be alone.”
Months passed.
Claire regained weight.
Returned to walking.
Then running.
She began therapy.
She moved into a small apartment filled with sunlight and deliberately messy books.
And eventually the indictment came.
Kidnapping.
Unlawful imprisonment.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Financial crimes.
Charges connected to Daniel Pierce’s death remained under separate investigation.
Grant pleaded not guilty.
His attorneys attacked Claire’s credibility.
Exactly as he had planned from the beginning.
But Grant had forgotten something.
He had recorded the basement.
The hidden camera intended to control Claire had captured nearly everything.
