Chapter 17 - Daniel’s Sister

Claire eventually met Daniel Pierce’s sister, Anna.
They met at a small café.
I didn’t attend.
That conversation belonged to them.
Claire told me about it afterward.
Anna brought a photograph of Daniel.
Not the professional photograph newspapers used.
A ridiculous vacation picture.
Daniel wearing a straw hat.
Claire laughed when she saw it.
“That’s him,” Anna said. “Not the man from the headlines.”
They talked for two hours.
Before leaving, Anna gave Claire an envelope.
Daniel had written notes while investigating Grant.
One page mentioned Claire.
C. Mercer may not know her identity is being used. Do not approach through Grant. Protect her.
Claire cried when she read it.
A man she barely knew had tried to protect her.
She had tried to expose what happened to him.
Neither effort had been wasted.
Claire later helped Anna establish a small foundation in Daniel’s name supporting whistleblowers facing retaliation.
They kept it modest.
Practical.
Legal assistance.
Emergency funds.
Secure reporting resources.
Claire insisted the foundation not use her face in advertising.
“This isn’t about making me famous,” she said.
“It’s about making it easier for the next person to speak.”
That was my daughter.
Grant had tried to reduce her world to a locked room.

She responded by opening doors for strangers.
