Chapter 9 - Grant Takes the Stand

Grant was charming.

That was the danger.

He spoke softly.

He expressed concern for Claire.

He called their marriage “complicated.”

He admitted mistakes.

Small ones.

Strategic ones.

He wanted the jury to believe he was imperfect rather than criminal.

For nearly two hours, his attorney guided him through carefully rehearsed answers.

Then cross-examination began.

The prosecutor was a woman named Elena Vasquez.

I knew her reputation.

Precise.

Patient.

She began with Solstice Haven.

“Mr. Mercer, does Solstice Haven exist?”

Grant hesitated.

“As a formal facility? No.”

“Did you tell Evelyn Carter that Claire was there?”

“Yes.”

“So that was false?”

“I was protecting Claire’s privacy.”

Vasquez nodded.

Then the suitcase.

Passport.

Running shoes.

Fake website.

Forged emails.

Cabin reservation.

Insurance policy.

Each question removed another brick from Grant’s story.

Then she reached the basement.

“Was the door locked from the outside?”

“Yes.”

“Could Claire open it?”

“No.”

“Was she attached to a cable?”

“For her safety.”

“Could she remove it?”

“No.”

“Could she leave?”

Grant paused.

The courtroom became silent.

“No.”

Four seconds.

One word.

The entire case.

Vasquez stepped closer.

“So when Claire asked to leave, she could not.”

Grant’s attorney objected.

Overruled.

Grant’s composure cracked.

“She wasn’t thinking clearly.”

Vasquez displayed Claire’s SOS tapping footage.

“Does this look unclear?”

Grant stared at the screen.

Then something extraordinary happened.

Claire looked at him.

Not frightened.

Not angry.

Simply looked.

Grant looked away first.

The jury noticed.

I did too.

When court adjourned, Claire and I walked outside together.

Reporters waited behind barricades.

Claire had refused interviews throughout the trial.

That afternoon, she stopped.

A reporter called:

“Dr. Mercer, do you have anything to say?”

Claire turned.

She considered the question.

Then spoke.

“My name is Dr. Claire Carter.”

She had filed to restore her maiden name.

“And I’m going home.”

That short clip spread everywhere.

But the trial wasn’t finished.

Because overnight, prosecutors received an unexpected message.

Miles Corbett wanted to talk.
