Chapter 16 - The House

Claire sold the house.
She never returned alone.
I went with her when she collected the last belongings.
The basement door had been removed during the investigation.
The staircase stood open.
Claire stopped at the top.
“You don’t have to go down.”
“I know.”
She descended anyway.
The room was empty.
No mattress.
No cable.
No camera.
No documents.
Just concrete.
Claire stood where the mattress had been.
I waited.
Finally she said:
“It looks smaller.”
I understood.
Fear enlarges rooms.
Memory enlarges them even more.
She walked toward the pipe.
Touched it.
Then turned away.
No tapping.
She didn’t need it.
Outside, the real-estate agent waited.
Claire handed her the keys.
“What do you want them to tell buyers?” I asked.
“The truth.”
So they did.
The house sold months later.
Claire bought a townhouse across town.
Huge windows.
Tiny yard.
No basement.
I approved enthusiastically.
She accused me of having a basement prejudice.
May you like
She was correct.
