Chapter 18 - The Sound in the Pipe

Two years after the rescue, Claire came to my house on a rainy Sunday.
We cooked.
Badly.
Robert had been the real cook.
After dinner, the power flickered.
Claire froze.
Just for a second.
Then the lights returned.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
Later, while I washed dishes, I heard tapping.
Three short.
Three long.
Three short.
I stopped.
The sound came from behind me.
Claire stood beside the radiator holding a spoon.
She was smiling.
I stared at her.
“That is not funny.”
“It’s a little funny.”
I grabbed another spoon.
Five taps.
Yes.
She laughed.
Then she hugged me.
“Thank you for hearing me.”
I held her tighter.
“You knew I would.”
She pulled back.
“No. That’s the thing.”
Her eyes filled.
“I hoped you would.”
There was a difference.
A painful one.
For fifteen days, she had tapped without knowing whether anyone would ever hear.
I touched her cheek.
“I’m sorry it took fifteen days.”
“Mom.”
“What?”
“You came.”
Two words.
May you like
Enough.
