Chapter 10 - The Question He Couldn't Answer

The hearing lasted hours.

Records were presented.

Transfers.

Applications.

Electronic signatures.

Liam's attorney challenged several conclusions.

That was his job.

But eventually Liam had to answer questions himself.

"When did your wife authorize this application?"

"I believed she had."

"Believed?"

"Yes."

"Did you personally witness her sign it?"

"No."

"Did she give you permission to sign on her behalf?"

Silence.

I watched Liam.

For months, he'd had explanations for everything.

Stress.

Fear.

Sophie.

Me.

Fatherhood.

Work.

But eventually every excuse reaches a question it cannot survive.

This was his.

"No," Liam finally said.

The room became very quiet.

I closed my eyes.

Not triumph.

Relief.

Truth didn't restore my marriage.

It restored reality.

Outside afterward, Robert waited for me.

"Are you okay?"

"I think so."

He looked at Hailey in my mother's arms.

"My son had everything."

I shook my head.

"No."

Robert looked at me.

"He had people who loved him. That's not the same as knowing how to value them."

Robert nodded slowly.

That evening, I returned home.

Hailey took three unsteady steps toward me.

Her first steps.

I screamed.

Mom cried.

Dad grabbed his phone too late.

Hailey fell onto her diaper and laughed.

And suddenly the hearing didn't matter.

Liam didn't matter.

My daughter had walked.

Life was moving forward.

May you like

So was I.
