Chapter 6 - He Came for My Daughter

Liam's filing painted a version of me I barely recognized.
According to him, I was overwhelmed.
Unstable.
Obsessive.
Vindictive.
He claimed the anniversary dinner had demonstrated "erratic behavior."
Apparently exposing your husband's affair after he announces his intention to divorce you makes you unstable.
Caroline remained calm.
"Documents beat adjectives."
So we documented everything.
Hailey's pediatric appointments.
Feeding schedules.
Receipts.
Messages.
Photographs.
Who had taken her to every checkup?
Me.
Who had stayed home with her?
Me.
Who had repeatedly asked Liam to come home?
Me.
And who had responded that work was more important?
Liam.
His own messages told the story.
Then Caroline asked for his work schedule.
That created another problem for him.
Many of the "late meetings" didn't exist.
The evenings he'd supposedly been working were evenings he'd spent with Sophie.
Sophie agreed to provide a statement.
When Liam discovered that, he exploded.
He called her.
She didn't answer.
He sent twelve messages.
She forwarded them to her attorney.
Then something happened I hadn't expected.
Diane called me.
"Can I come over?"
She arrived carrying diapers and formula.
The moment she saw Hailey, she cried.
"I'm ashamed."
I hugged her.
"You didn't cheat on me."
"I raised him."
"You raised an adult who made his own choices."
She looked toward the nursery.
"He's telling people you won't let him see Hailey."
My stomach tightened.
"That's not true."
"I know."
"How?"
"Because Robert drove him to the supervised visit."
I stared at her.
Diane took my hand.
"I'm not choosing between my son and my granddaughter. But I won't lie for him."
Those words mattered more than she knew.
A week later, we attended our first temporary custody hearing.
Liam wore the navy suit he'd worn at our wedding rehearsal dinner.
He looked polished.
Responsible.
Calm.
For a moment, I remembered why I'd fallen in love with him.
Then his attorney described me as a woman struggling after childbirth.
I looked at Liam.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
Caroline stood.
And one by one, she presented the facts.
The pediatric records.
The messages.
His travel.
His affair.
His own requests to postpone visits.
The judge didn't care about revenge.
The judge cared about Hailey.
That was exactly what I wanted.
The existing arrangement remained temporarily in place while Liam was ordered to participate consistently in parenting time before seeking expansion.
Outside the courthouse, Liam approached me.
"You won."
"This isn't winning."
"You made me look like a monster."
"No."
I looked directly at him.
"I showed what happened."
He lowered his voice.
"You think you're perfect?"
"No."
"Then why are you doing this?"
"Because you asked for primary custody of a baby whose bedtime you don't know."
He flinched.
I walked away.
Then he said something that stopped me.
"I never wanted primary custody."
I turned.
"What?"
"My lawyer said it would give us leverage."
I stared at him.
"Leverage for what?"
He realized too late that he'd said too much.
"The finances," I whispered.
His silence confirmed it.
My daughter had been bargaining power.
Something inside me closed permanently.
"Liam."
He looked at me.
"Whatever part of me still wondered whether our marriage could have been saved?"
I shook my head.
"You just killed it."
I left him standing outside the courthouse.
That night, I accepted the director position.
For the first time in months, I slept four uninterrupted hours.
It felt like a miracle.
But at 6:30 the next morning, Robert called.
His voice was urgent.
"Emma, turn on the news."
I did.
And there was Liam.
Standing outside his office.
Reporters around him.
Because the company had discovered financial irregularities.
May you like
And suddenly, my missing $28,000 looked like the smallest part of the story.
