Chapter 5 - The Signature That Wasn't Mine

The document was an application for a personal line of credit.

Applicant:

Emma Carter.

My name.

My address.

My Social Security information.

My income from before maternity leave.

And at the bottom—

my signature.

Except I had never applied for it.

Robert saw my face.

"What is it?"

I couldn't answer.

My father took the paper.

His expression changed.

"Emma?"

"I didn't sign this."

Robert sat down.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered, "What has my son done?"

Caroline's answer the following morning was careful.

"We don't make accusations until the records are verified."

So we verified them.

The lender confirmed an application had been submitted electronically.

The email address attached to it wasn't mine.

But the recovery phone number belonged to Liam.

Suddenly our divorce had become something else entirely.

Caroline advised me to speak with the appropriate authorities and credit bureaus.

I followed every instruction.

For the first time since Hailey was born, I stopped thinking about saving my marriage.

My only job was protecting my daughter and myself.

Liam continued sending messages.

Some apologetic.

Some angry.

Some strangely romantic.

At 9:14 one night:

Nobody will ever love you like I do.

At 9:37:

You're destroying our family.

At 10:02:

Hailey deserves both parents.

That one made me furious.

Because Hailey had always deserved both parents.

Liam was the one who had chosen not to be one.

Still, I never tried to keep him from being her father.

Through attorneys, we arranged temporary supervised visits while everything was being sorted out.

His first visit lasted ninety minutes.

I waited in another room.

When Hailey began crying, Liam lasted seven minutes before asking the supervisor to bring me in.

"I don't know what she wants."

I looked at him.

"She's hungry."

"How am I supposed to know?"

"Because you're her father."

He looked embarrassed.

For one brief moment, I saw something underneath the arrogance.

Fear.

Liam didn't know his daughter.

Not because I had prevented it.

Because he'd spent the first seven weeks of her life somewhere else.

Afterward, he stood in the hallway.

"Emma."

I stopped.

"I do love her."

"Then learn her."

His eyes filled.

"And you?"

I looked at him.

"You don't get to ask me that anymore."

I walked away.

Three days later, Sophie requested a meeting.

Public place.

My attorney knew.

We met in a coffee shop.

She looked different from the woman I had imagined.

Smaller somehow.

Ashamed.

She pushed an envelope toward me.

"What's this?"

"Something Liam gave me."

Inside was a jewelry receipt.

$8,400.

A diamond bracelet.

Purchased six weeks before Hailey's birth.

I remembered that week.

Liam had told me money was tight.

I had canceled the maternity photographs I wanted because they cost $450.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes pain becomes absurd.

"I skipped maternity photos."

Sophie stared at me.

"What?"

"Nothing."

She began crying.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

For weeks, I had imagined hating Sophie.

But sitting across from her, I realized something.

She hadn't made vows to me.

Liam had.

"You hurt me," I said.

"I know."

"You knew I existed."

"I know."

"You knew I was pregnant."

She nodded.

"So I'm not going to tell you it wasn't your responsibility."

"I understand."

"But I'm not going to spend the rest of my life hating you either."

She wiped her face.

"Why?"

"Because I've already given Liam enough of my life."

That afternoon, something unexpected happened.

My old boss called.

Before maternity leave, I had been a senior marketing strategist.

"Take whatever leave you need," Vanessa told me. "But when you're ready, there's a director position opening."

I looked at Hailey sleeping beside me.

For weeks, I'd thought my life was collapsing.

Suddenly, I saw another possibility.

Maybe it wasn't collapsing.

Maybe the wrong pieces were falling away.

But that evening, Caroline called.

"Emma, we received Liam's response."

"And?"

"He wants custody."

My heart stopped.

"How much?"

There was a pause.

"Primary."

I couldn't speak.

Caroline continued.

"And he's claiming you've been emotionally unstable since giving birth."

That was the moment Liam crossed a line I would never forget.

The affair had broken my heart.

Now he was coming for my daughter.

May you like

And I was done being quiet.
