Chapter 16 - Another Family Dinner

Our wedding was small.
Backyard.
Forty guests.
No extravagant venue.
No social-media spectacle.
But there was one question everyone quietly wondered.
Would Liam come?
Daniel had left the decision to me.
I left it to Hailey.
She was four.
"I want Daddy there."
So Liam came.
He sat beside Diane and Robert.
When I walked down the aisle, our eyes met briefly.
He smiled.
Sad.
But genuine.
Daniel took my hands.
Hailey stood between us holding flowers.
During the reception, Liam approached Daniel.
I watched from across the yard.
They spoke quietly.
Then shook hands.
Later, Daniel told me what Liam had said.
"Don't make her ask twice whether you're coming home."
Seven words.
That was all.
I went into the bathroom and cried.
Not because I wanted Liam back.
Because somewhere inside that sentence was the acknowledgment I'd waited years to hear.
He finally understood.
Too late.
But he understood.
That night, our families sat around another dinner table.
This time, there were no secret recordings.
No hidden affairs.
No panic.
Only food.
Laughter.
