Chapter 11 - One Year Later

On the first anniversary of the dinner that ended my marriage, I didn't throw a party.

I made pancakes.

Hailey threw blueberries onto the floor.

I drank coffee barefoot in the kitchen.

At ten, Liam arrived for pickup.

He had changed.

Not magically.

Not completely.

But visibly.

He arrived on time now.

He carried diapers.

He knew Hailey's pediatrician.

He had moved into a modest apartment.

His expensive car was gone.

So were the designer suits.

"Happy anniversary," he said awkwardly.

I raised an eyebrow.

He immediately winced.

"Wrong phrase."

I laughed despite myself.

"Very wrong."

He looked toward the dining room.

"I think about that night a lot."

"So do I."

"I hated you for exposing me."

"I know."

"Then I realized I hated being seen."

That surprised me.

Liam crouched as Hailey ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

His face changed.

Every time she called him that, something softened.

He lifted her.

Then looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

He'd apologized before.

But this sounded different.

There was no request attached.

No "take me back."

No "but you also."

Just sorry.

I nodded.

"I hope you mean it."

"I do."

"Then show Hailey."

He held our daughter tighter.

"I will."

As they left, I felt something I hadn't expected.

Peace.

Not because Liam had changed.

May you like

Because whether he changed or not no longer determined my life.
