Chapter 12 - The Second Pink Cake

Lily’s first birthday was held beneath the same pavilion.

The exact place where everything had broken.

Pink balloons floated beneath the roof.

White flowers covered the tables.

And in the center sat a pink cake.

Linda arrived early.

When she saw it, she stopped.

Rachel whispered to me:

“Should we hide the cake knives?”

I nearly choked laughing.

Linda heard.

To my surprise, she laughed too.

“I deserve that.”

During the party, Daniel stood beside me.

We still weren't officially back together.

But we were closer.

Much closer.

When it was time for Lily to smash her little birthday cake, she plunged both hands into the frosting and slapped one directly against Daniel’s cheek.

Everyone went silent.

Then Linda started laughing.

I laughed.

Daniel laughed.

Within seconds, the entire pavilion erupted.

Daniel looked at me, pink frosting dripping from his face.

“Apparently this family has a cake problem.”

That was the moment I knew the memory no longer controlled me.

We had made a new one.
