Chapter 14 - The Grandmother Lily Knew

Linda never became easy.
People rarely transform into entirely different personalities.
She still liked control.
Still had opinions about everything.
Still believed nobody arranged flowers correctly except her.
But she learned boundaries.
More importantly, she learned repair.
When she overstepped, she apologized.
When I said no, she stopped.
When Daniel disagreed, she didn't threaten abandonment.
And Lily adored her.
That frightened me at first.
Then I realized I wasn't protecting Lily by denying her relationships that had become healthy.
I was protecting her by watching those relationships carefully.
One afternoon, I overheard Linda speaking to Lily.
My daughter was playing with wooden blocks.
Linda whispered:
“You know something? Your grandma once said something very stupid before you were born.”
I froze outside the room.
Lily babbled.
Linda smiled sadly.
“I thought your daddy needed a boy.”
She touched Lily’s tiny hand.
“But I was wrong.”
My throat tightened.
“You were exactly who we needed.”
I walked away before Linda saw me crying.
That was the day I forgave her.
Not forgot.
Not erased.
Forgave.

There was a difference.
