Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Question

Fourteen months after the baby shower, Daniel asked me to meet him beneath the pavilion.

I immediately became suspicious.

“You're not planning another gender reveal, are you?”

He laughed.

“No.”

There was a small table beneath the lights.

No crowd.

No cameras.

No mother.

Just us.

He didn't kneel.

He didn't bring a new ring.

Instead, he placed our original wedding photograph on the table.

“I don't want this marriage back.”

I stared at him.

“Good opening.”

He smiled nervously.

“I want a new one.”

He explained that he didn't want me to pretend the past hadn't happened.

He wanted us to choose each other again with everything exposed.

The good.

The ugly.

The embarrassing.

The financial disaster.

The cake.

All of it.

Then he asked:

“Would you consider ending the separation?”

I didn't answer immediately.

I had learned not to answer important questions simply because somebody was waiting.

Finally, I said:

“Yes.”

Daniel cried.

I did too.

Then I kissed him.

May you like

This time, because I wanted to.
