Chapter 17 - The Question About Another Baby

Two years after the shower, Daniel and I sat on the porch while Lily chased fireflies.
He looked at me.
“Can I ask a dangerous question?”
“No.”
He laughed.
“I haven't asked yet.”
“I know that tone.”
He took my hand.
“Do you ever want another baby?”
I looked toward Lily.
“Maybe.”
“If it's another girl?”
I slowly turned toward him.
He grinned.
“I’m kidding.”
“You better be.”
He squeezed my hand.
“I'd love another girl.”
From behind us, Linda said:
“So would I.”
We both turned.
She was carrying lemonade.
I stared at her.
“What?”
Linda shrugged.
“Girls are wonderful.”
Daniel almost fell out of his chair laughing.
His mother hit him with a napkin.
Not cake.
