Chapter 16 - What Happened to Carter Construction

Daniel's company survived.

Barely.

It became smaller.

More transparent.

Less impressive.

Daniel loved it more.

Marcus became a partner.

Independent accountants reviewed everything quarterly.

Daniel stopped measuring success by whether people thought he was wealthy.

That changed our marriage more than I expected.

Linda sold her Mercedes.

Not because we demanded it.

Because she finally admitted she couldn't afford it.

She moved into a smaller house.

The first time I visited, she looked embarrassed.

I looked around.

“It’s beautiful.”

“You don't think it's small?”

“I think it's yours.”

She stared at me.

Then smiled.

Maybe all of us had spent too much time confusing appearances with security.

The estate hadn't made me powerful.

Linda’s Mercedes hadn't made her successful.

Daniel’s company hadn't made him strong.

The truth had stripped all of that away.

What remained was much less glamorous.

May you like

And much more real.
