Chapter 13 - The Ring in the Drawer

A week after Lily’s birthday, I found my wedding ring.
I had removed it months earlier.
It was sitting in my dresser.
I held it for a long time.
Daniel had changed.
So had I.
But I didn't want our old marriage back.
That marriage had been built on avoidance.
I wanted something different.
That evening, Daniel came to pick Lily up.
I stopped him.
“Do you still want us?”
He looked stunned.
“Yes.”
“Not the old us.”
“No.”
“Because I can't go back.”
“I don't want to.”
I opened my hand.
The ring rested in my palm.
His eyes filled.
“I’m not putting this back on tonight.”
He nodded.
“But maybe someday.”
He smiled.
“I can wait.”
For once, waiting didn't feel like weakness.
May you like
It felt like choice.
