Chapter 10 - Claire’s Invitation

I stared at the envelope for a full minute.
Hannah read the card.
Then looked at me.
“You going?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because attending my ex-wife’s wedding sounds like a punishment invented by medieval monks.”
She laughed.
Claire wasn’t marrying Derek.
His chapter in her life had ended permanently.
The groom was a high-school guidance counselor named Aaron.
Forty-one.
Divorced.
Two daughters.
I had met him once.
He seemed kind.
Which, surprisingly, bothered me more than if he had been awful.
Because it meant Claire might actually have learned something.
Her handwritten note was short.
You don’t owe me your presence. But you were fourteen years of my life, Cole. I would rather honor that history than pretend it never happened. Hannah is invited too.
I didn’t attend the ceremony.
That boundary mattered.
But I sent a gift.
Two handmade ceramic coffee mugs.
Nothing symbolic.
At least I pretended it wasn’t.
Claire texted afterward.
Thank you.
I replied:
I hope you’re happy.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Returned.
Finally:
I hope you are too.
I looked across the living room.
Hannah was asleep on the couch with a medical journal open on her chest.
I smiled.
I am.
That should have been the end.
But life rarely respects clean endings.
Two weeks later, Aaron came to the gym.
Alone.
He introduced himself even though I remembered him.
“I wanted to thank you.”
“For mugs?”
“For letting her go without destroying her.”
I didn’t know what to say.
He continued.
“She carries a lot of guilt.”
“That belongs to her.”
“I know.”
“And you don’t need my blessing.”
“I know that too.”
I liked him immediately, which was inconvenient.
He shook my hand.
Then left.
That night I realized Claire and I had finally achieved something we had failed to achieve while married.
We had stopped demanding that the other person complete us.
Sometimes the happiest ending to a marriage is not reconciliation.
May you like
It is peace.
