Chapter 11 - The Video Nobody Expected

On the second anniversary of the fight, Apex Predator posted a video.
Rachel had secretly edited it.
The opening showed Derek pointing at me.
Then my limp.
The kick.
The takedown.
But instead of ending there, the footage continued through two years.
Veterans training.
A grandmother learning to fall safely.
The teenager with the knee brace doing his first controlled squat.
Derek cleaning mats.
Me laughing with students.
Hannah standing beside me.
The final caption read:
THE FIGHT LASTED FIVE MINUTES. WHAT CAME AFTER MATTERED MORE.
It went viral.
Again.
But this time, I didn’t hate it.
Messages arrived from everywhere.
Not asking how to win fights.
Asking how to start over.
I couldn’t answer everyone.
So I wrote one public message.
You do not have to become who you used to be to survive what happens next. Build someone new.
Marcus called.
“That was almost inspirational.”
“Almost?”
“Don’t get arrogant.”
The gym created a nonprofit scholarship fund.
We called it Second Round.
Claire laughed when she heard.
Her studio was called Second Wind.
Apparently all middle-aged divorced people become obsessed with numerical metaphors.
She donated anonymously.
I knew it was her because she had always used the same odd number when making donations.
$214.
Our wedding date.
February 14.
I didn’t expose her.
