Chapter 15 - Hannah’s Question

Hannah proposed to me.
Technically.
We were sitting on the back porch.
She looked over and said, “Are we going to get married or become one of those couples who discuss dishwasher warranties for thirty years?”
I nearly choked on my coffee.
“That’s your proposal?”
“Yes.”
“Terrible.”
“Answer.”
I looked at her.
At the woman who had known me injured.
Known me divorced.
Known me quiet.
Known me afraid.
And had never once demanded a performance.
“Yes.”
She blinked.
Apparently she had expected more resistance.
“Really?”
“Really.”
We married six months later.
Small ceremony.
Backyard.
Marcus stood beside me.
Rachel attended.
No press.
No viral video.
No dramatic interruption.
Claire sent flowers.
The card contained only four words.
You deserve this peace.
I read it once.
Then placed it beside the other cards.
Hannah walked toward me.

And I never looked backward.
