Chapter 13 - Marcus Finally Told the Truth

Marcus had hidden something from me.

He was retiring.

Not dramatically.

No illness.

No catastrophe.

He was simply tired.

“I don’t know who I am without the work,” he admitted.

I nearly laughed.

“What?”

“You spent years telling me that.”

“Advice is easier when it’s somebody else’s life.”

True.

He moved closer.

Started teaching at the gym.

Suddenly Saturday mornings felt like old times without becoming trapped by old memories.

We created a veterans-only hour.

No cameras.

No social media.

No war stories required.

People could speak.

Or not.

One Saturday, Marcus looked across the mat.

“You know what’s funny?”

“What?”

“Claire thought normal made you boring.”

I waited.

“You spent half your life trying to earn boring.”

I smiled.

“Turns out boring’s pretty good.”

Hannah entered carrying coffee.

Marcus pointed.

“Especially your version.”

I threw a towel at him.

For the first time, the future felt larger than the past.

End of Chapter 13.
