Chapter 9 - The House Became Home Again

The renovation took four months.

I removed the kitchen island where Claire’s phone had played Derek’s voice.

Not because I hated the island.

Because the contractor said the room would flow better.

That distinction felt important.

Pain had stopped making every decision.

Hannah helped choose cabinets.

Marcus mocked my backsplash.

Rachel gave me a heavy bag for the garage.

I never hung it.

Instead, I built shelves.

Apparently HVAC Cole had won.

One Sunday, Hannah found the old anniversary photograph in a box.

She held it carefully.

“You keeping this?”

I looked at Claire’s face.

Mine.

Two people who had meant their promises when they made them.

“Yes.”

Hannah nodded.

No questions.

I put it into a storage box.

History didn’t need to be displayed to remain real.

At the gym, Foundations grew to sixty members.

We split it into two classes.

One for beginners.

One focused on adaptive training.

Rachel wanted to pay me.

I refused until my accountant called me an idiot.

Then I accepted.

Part-time.

The first dollar I earned teaching again went into a frame.

Marcus saw it.

“You’re sentimental now?”

“Shut up.”

The viral fame faded.

Thank God.

Occasionally someone recognized me at restaurants.

“Five-minute guy!”

I hated that name.

Hannah loved it.

Then one afternoon, a father and teenage son approached me after class.

The boy had a brace on his leg.

His father said, “He hasn’t wanted to leave the house since surgery.”

The boy stared at the floor.

I crouched enough to meet his eyes.

“Knee?”

He nodded.

“Mine too.”

He glanced at my leg.

“You still fight?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t need to.”

He thought about that.

“Can I still train?”

“Absolutely.”

The smile he gave me was worth more than every view on every video.

That evening, I understood something.

Derek’s challenge had been ridiculous.

The affair had been devastating.

The divorce had cost me years of assumptions.

But none of those things got to decide what happened next.

I did.

And soon, I would face the one moment I hadn’t prepared for.

Claire was getting married again.

May you like

And an invitation arrived with my name on it.

End of Chapter 9.
