Chapter 4 - The Camera That Disappeared

Claire's expression lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then she recovered.

“What memory card?”

Mom smiled faintly.

The frightened old woman I'd found in darkness was still there.

But now something else had returned.

Defiance.

“The one you couldn't find.”

Claire laughed.

“See?”

She turned toward Dr. Mercer.

“This is exactly what I'm talking about.”

I watched the doctor.

He didn't laugh.

“Mrs. Carter,” he said to Mom, “what was on this memory card?”

“Videos.”

“Of?”

“My daughter-in-law.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

Mom looked at me.

I reached into my pocket.

Claire stopped breathing.

I placed the memory card on the table.

Nobody spoke.

Dr. Mercer stared at it.

Claire stared at me.

“Daniel,” she said quietly, “can we talk privately?”

“Later.”

“No. Now.”

Dr. Mercer cleared his throat.

“Perhaps I should—”

“Stay,” I said.

Claire glared at me.

I smiled.

“Mom's evaluation isn't finished.”

Claire followed me into the kitchen anyway.

The second we were out of sight, her voice dropped.

“What are you doing?”

“Helping Mom.”

“You're making this worse.”

“How?”

“She is sick.”

“Maybe.”

“You've been here one night.”

“True.”

“I've been dealing with this for eight months.”

“Also true.”

Claire stepped closer.

“She manipulated you.”

“How?”

“The camera. The stories. She's been planning this.”

I almost admired the speed.

A new narrative formed instantly.

Mom wasn't a victim.

Mom was manipulative.

“Why would she do that?”

“Because she hates me.”

“She told me you stole money.”

Claire froze.

There.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But there.

“See?” she said. “Paranoia.”

“Forty-seven thousand dollars?”

Silence.

“What?”

“I didn't say a number.”

Claire stared at me.

Then she laughed.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

I smiled.

“Neither do I.”

I returned to the bedroom.

Dr. Mercer was packing his briefcase.

“We'll need to reschedule.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“This situation has become adversarial.”

“Doctor, were you planning to recommend permanent placement today?”

His eyes hardened.

“I don't discuss conclusions before completing an assessment.”

“Did Claire tell you Mom was violent?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see evidence?”

“I received reports.”

“From Claire?”

“And supporting documentation.”

“From whom?”

“Daniel.”

Claire's voice came from behind me.

“Stop.”

I turned.

She looked furious.

Not frightened anymore.

Furious.

“You come home after eight months and suddenly you're an expert?”

“No.”

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.”

“I'd like to.”

“I gave up everything!”

Mom flinched.

Claire saw it.

Dr. Mercer saw it too.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

Perfect timing.

I answered on speaker.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Detective Hale and I are outside.”

Claire's face went white.

I walked to the front door.

Two people were waiting.

Rebecca.

And Detective Marcus Hale.

Claire whispered, “You called police?”

I looked at her.

“No.”

Technically true.

Rebecca had.

Detective Hale entered.

He introduced himself.

Claire immediately switched personalities.

She began crying.

“My mother-in-law is sick.”

Hale didn't react.

“My husband doesn't understand.”

Still nothing.

“She hurts herself.”

Hale looked toward Mom.

Then toward me.

“Mr. Carter, you said you had documentation?”

“I do.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, don't.”

I looked at my wife.

Then at the woman who had spent eight months convincing everyone around us that my mother couldn't be trusted.

“Why?”

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I placed my phone on the kitchen counter.

Then played the recording.

Claire's own voice filled the room.

No one will trust that old woman.

Nobody moved.

The recording continued.

Tomorrow the psychiatrist signs off. After that, Daniel will have no reason to question the power of attorney. Once she's declared incompetent, we can finish the transfer.

Claire lunged toward the phone.

Detective Hale stepped between us.

“Don't touch it.”

“I was drunk!”

Hale looked at her.

“So you acknowledge that's your voice?”

Claire realized her mistake.

“I—”

Rebecca almost smiled.

Claire turned toward me.

“You recorded me?”

“Yes.”

“You bastard.”

Mom made a small sound.

Claire spun toward her.

“This is your fault!”

That was the moment Hale moved.

He positioned himself between Claire and Mom.

“Ma'am, step back.”

Claire stared at everyone.

Then something strange happened.

Dr. Mercer quietly picked up his briefcase.

He headed toward the door.

Rebecca noticed.

“Doctor?”

He stopped.

“We're going to need to speak with you too.”

His hand tightened around the briefcase.

And suddenly I understood something.

Claire's plan was bigger than I'd thought.

The missing money.

The forged documents.

The questionable psychiatrist.

The secret calls.

This wasn't simply one desperate woman trying to steal from her mother-in-law.

There was a system behind it.

And when Detective Hale opened Dr. Mercer's briefcase with his consent twenty minutes later, we found a second competency report.

Already completed.

Already signed.

It declared my mother legally incapable of managing her affairs.

There was only one problem.

The report was dated yesterday.

May you like

Before Dr. Mercer had ever examined her.
