Chapter 12 - Claire’s Second Phone

Police found Claire's second phone in Evan's cabin.
She'd used it for conversations she didn't want connected to our family account.
The messages destroyed what remained of her story.
There were discussions about Mom's medication.
Property values.
Account balances.
The timing of my deployment.
One message from Claire to Nathan read:
He comes home September 20. Everything needs to look established before then.
Established.
That word explained the photographs.
The neighbors.
The stories.
The missing camera.
Claire wasn't simply trying to convince me Mom had dementia.
She was creating history.
If five neighbors had heard the same story for months, it sounded true.
If medical paperwork repeated it, it sounded true.
If Mom objected after I returned, Claire could say denial was part of the illness.
It was horrifying.
It was also collapsing.
Then investigators found a photograph on the phone.
Mom asleep.
A document beside her hand.
Claire had apparently attempted to make it appear that Mom had signed while lucid.
But zooming in revealed the signature wasn't complete.
Another photo, taken minutes later, showed the finished signature.
Different handwriting pressure.
Different letter formation.
Forgery specialists confirmed it.
The case no longer depended solely on testimony.
May you like
Claire had photographed part of her own crime.
