Chapter 16 - The Recording Played Out Loud

The strongest evidence came from Claire herself.

Her phone.

Her recorded meeting.

Her messages.

Her late-night conversation.

One by one, the words she'd used when she believed Mom was powerless returned to the room.

No one will trust that old woman.

Keep her isolated.

Everything needs to look established.

She wouldn't cooperate.

Claire cried.

Mom didn't.

At least not until we left.

In the hallway, Mom leaned against me.

“You know what's strange?”

“What?”

“I thought hearing her admit it would make me feel better.”

“Doesn't it?”

“No.”

She looked exhausted.

“It just makes it real.”

I understood.

Justice doesn't reverse time.

It doesn't erase fear.

It doesn't make fifty-three locked nights disappear.

It simply tells the truth publicly.

Sometimes that's enough to begin.

Not finish.

May you like

Begin.
