Chapter 14 - The Trap at Breakfast

Before charges were finalized, Claire requested one meeting.

Through attorneys.

Neutral location.

Recorded.

Mom surprised everyone.

“I'll go.”

We met in a conference room.

Claire entered looking smaller than I remembered.

No perfect hair.

No polished smile.

She sat opposite Mom.

For almost a minute, nobody spoke.

Then Claire whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Mom studied her.

“For what?”

Claire began crying.

“Everything.”

“Name it.”

Claire looked stunned.

Mom repeated:

“Name what you're sorry for.”

“I made mistakes.”

“Which ones?”

“I was under pressure.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Claire looked at me.

I didn't help her.

Finally she said, “I shouldn't have locked the door.”

Mom nodded.

“What else?”

“I shouldn't have taken your phone.”

“What else?”

Claire's attorney shifted.

“Claire—”

But Claire continued.

“I shouldn't have let Evan handle the money.”

Mom leaned forward.

“Did I have dementia?”

Silence.

“Claire.”

Claire cried.

“No.”

Nobody moved.

Mom asked:

“Did you know I was lucid?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell people I wasn't?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Claire covered her face.

“Because nobody would've let me control anything otherwise.”

There it was.

The entire case in one sentence.

The meeting ended minutes later.

Outside, Mom took my arm.

Her legs were trembling.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She inhaled.

“Ask me again tomorrow.”

I smiled.

“That sounds fair.”

Behind us, prosecutors were already discussing Claire's admissions.

The trap had never been complicated.

May you like

Mom had simply asked her to tell the truth.
