Chapter 17 - When the Handcuffs Clicked

The arrest came on a rainy morning.

Claire had been allowed to leave previous proceedings while prosecutors finalized additional charges.

That morning changed it.

Investigators discovered evidence suggesting attempts to destroy financial records and coordinate stories.

Detective Hale arrived at the house where Claire was staying.

Mom and I weren't there.

I didn't need to watch.

But later, Hale told us Claire had asked one question.

“Did Daniel do this?”

Hale answered:

“No. Evidence did.”

I liked that answer.

Claire was taken into custody.

Evan faced his own case.

Nathan cooperated extensively.

Mercer's professional future collapsed under investigation.

The legal process wasn't magically finished.

Cases take time.

Arguments continue.

Charges are tested.

Evidence is challenged.

But one thing was finished.

Claire could no longer walk into my mother's room.

She could no longer lock that door.

That evening, I removed the lock hardware permanently.

Four screw holes remained.

Mom stood behind me.

“You could replace the door.”

“I will.”

“No.”

I turned.

She touched the holes.

“Leave them.”

“Why?”

“Not forever.”

She smiled sadly.

“Just until I stop being afraid of them.”

So we did.
