Chapter 13 - The Signature That Wasn’t Hers

The forensic document examiner asked Mom to sign her name ten times.
She did.
Even with age-related changes, her handwriting retained distinctive patterns.
The forged signature didn't match.
But something else did.
Claire's handwriting.
Not perfectly.
She'd disguised it.
But several letter formations were consistent.
When confronted, Claire blamed Evan.
Evan blamed Claire.
Nathan blamed both.
Mercer claimed ignorance.
Their alliance disintegrated.
That was when prosecutors offered Mom a choice.
A quieter resolution might avoid a long trial.
Mom listened.
Then asked:
“Would it stop them from doing this to somebody else?”
The prosecutor carefully explained what different outcomes could mean.
Mom thought about it.
“I spent fifty-three days behind that door.”
She looked at me.
“I can spend a few hours telling the truth.”

Her decision was made.
