Chapter 11 - The Second Proposal

Caleb proposed again eleven months after the engagement dinner.

There were no chandeliers.

No twenty-three guests.

No photographer.

No Sutton family church.

They were walking through a botanical garden where Tessa had once told him she imagined getting married outdoors.

Caleb stopped beneath an old oak tree.

He didn’t kneel immediately.

First he asked a question.

“Are we ready to talk about marriage again?”

Tessa laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Only then did he kneel.

The ring was different.

Smaller.

Simpler.

Chosen after Tessa had shown him what she liked.

“Will you build a family with me?”

Not join mine.

Not become a Sutton.

May you like

Build one with me.

Tessa said yes.
